I'm driving to Chicago and want to use my navigation on the nexus 7 to get me there. Can I use it while offline? If I download the maps can it help? Thanks guys!

So you can't use the navigation app that came on this tablet with offline use?

I don't think so. I haven't tried but I'm sure it will require an Internet connection. These stuff always do!

U can download a particular area in google maps for offline navigation, but u can only download a certain amount. I dont know the amount but its about the size of a city. IE Philadelphia

Sygic is a good one. Also try Navigon, which I also like a lot. The inbuilt one works, but you have to download chunks of map. And if you haven't downloaded the ones you need - like if you are making side or unanticipated trips - unless you have wifi you are out of luck. Sygic and Navigon are completely offline.

If you start with a connection just to get the route started then you can travel without any internet connection if and only if you don't need to recalculate along the way. I suggest that you use foxfi to tether your phone to the tablet

That was my initial plan. But I'm afraid on metro pcs Internet service might screw up on the road. Then what happens?! Lol

You only need internet to start the navigation. After that as long as you follow the directions it will work the whole way. Without internet it will not recalculate. If you use it without internet then make a pit stop and it needs to eecalculate then you can tether and do it. You do not need a constant connection. If you lose signal intermittently then that is OK.

I can vouch for this. I recently made a multiple hour drive through the middle of nowhere (no cell service at all the majority of the time) and Google Maps Navigation worked like a champ. I didn't get the pretty satellite imagery but it led me to my destination without issues.

Thanks u guys! Let y'all know what happens.

I use navigon on my phone but it doesn't appear to be compatible with the Nexus 7.

Navfree is a decent one, and it's free. Even has spoken instructions. Play Store Link

+1

I have this loaded and It works pretty well. Using it around town (known area) it doesn't necessarily take the route that I would take, but it will get you from point A to point B. POI's are a bit lacking too.

Overall though, I think it works quite well, especially for the price :-)
