I was using Verizon messages + which i really liked but they are discontinuing it and pushing the Google messages. I've been using Google messages now for a couple of weeks and I don't like it. Not nearly as good as messages +. Anyone got a recommendation of a really good texting app that's intuitive and easy to use? Thank you!!

I would recommend that you check out Textra. However, you should know that, just like other Android messaging apps, unless and until Google opens up their protocol/API to 3rd parties, RCS will not be supported.

Textra info HERE.

I'd be sticking with Samsung Messages except for the fact that the almost daily prompts to move to Google Messages is a pain. another fun fact.....I've lost some messages in the transition. all of my messages in Samsung Messages would save to Samsung Cloud. end of the world? no. a shame and aggravating? yes.

They gave me a specific date of like Nov 7 and messages + would be turned off. So is regular Verizon messages staying on or are they turning that off as well?

I'm curious what one you like about Google messages? I use it on all my phones so I know it's personal preference but I feel everything I need in messaging with the app is more than enough. I don't look to customize much of the theme with it.
I don’t know if you were only addressing the OP - and my apologies if you were - but I thought that I would chime in with my 2 cents worth of opinion. ;) While customizing themes is a nice feature, it hasn’t been one of the primary reasons I have preferred Textra over Google Messages. The top 5 reasons why I have used Textra as my primary messaging app and why I haven’t cared for Google Messages are, unlike Textra, with Google Messages you:
  • Can’t adjust font size. In my opinion, Google Messages text is too small. Not everyone shares the same vision, some people have vision disorders and users should be able to adjust the text to their eyesight.
  • Can’t adjust colours. Once again, individuals see and react to colour differently. There are plenty of colourblind males – about 8% of the population – along with a lesser amount of females. You may be able to see a certain tone of blue better than I can. Let the user decide what colours work best for their individual eyesight.
  • Can’t copy and paste as much or as little of a text as you want. With Google Messages, you must copy a whole text message and then delete text that you didn’t really want in the copy and paste. This is just silly as you can copy and paste as much or as little text as you want in most other apps, including many of Google’s apps.
  • Can’t set individual vibration patterns for each contact. You are in a meeting and you need to hear from and respond to one contact as soon as possible. What do you do? An individual vibration pattern lets you decide whether a text is important enough to read and/or answer in an environment where you want or need to silence your phone notifications and only respond to that one important message.
  • Can’t schedule messages or add a delay to messages. These are handy features. “Hey, it’s 4AM and I don’t want to wake Mary, but want to send a text while I am thinking about it.” I just schedule the text for an 8AM delivery.
While these are the top 5 reasons, there are more Textra features which make it an attractive alternative to Google Messages.

Good list & I agree on all of the points, especially the cut & paste text selection. Hopefully, they will rectify that down the road.

Also, I wish Google Messages had a trash can instead of its gone for good.

One thing you can do regarding the text size is use the 'pinch & spread' your fingers to increase & decrease the font size.

Google did finally add the schedule messages feature.

I'm hopeful for the other features you mentioned to be added also. They are very useful options.
🤞

Thanks for the heads up. Just opened Google Messages and saw the schedule feature for the first time. I might never had known it was there if you hadn't mentioned that it was. 😊

That's one small step for Google, one giant leap for humankind. 😉
You are welcome. :)

The schedule message feature was a big one for me. At one time, I was switching to Samsung Messages just to send a scheduled text and then right back to Google Messages. Not very convenient, but neither was the time I woke my sister-in-law at 2am from a text I sent. 😲 She wasn't happy.... 🫣

Agree with @BerryBubbles . I believe that Google Message offers most, if not all of the features listed. I have been using Google M for quite some time now, even with my previous Samsung phones. I like it. 🍻
Please share. I, and others, would love to know how you change font size (not pinch & spread, which I know can be done, but changing the text size in the app [and only the app - no accessibility mode that changes the text size on everything] so that it is always the same, consistent size that works best for me and my use case), adjust colours in Google Messages to my preference, copy and paste one word out of a sentence or one sentence out of a paragraph and set up individual vibration patterns for each of my contacts. Your assistance in helping me find these features will help make the transition to Google Messages as my default app much, much easier and be truly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Tough crowd. I guess your needs are more complex than mine. I can change colors, pinch to zoom. The copy and paste won't meet your expectations. I know many apps are a compromise... I hope you find something that works.
