If you are not unlimited you should be able to use the hotspot through settings without having another app. Does not apply if you are on unlimited.

Why did I pay full price to keep this damn unlimited plan if I can't use WiFi. Now that I've researched it I see that this is a known issue. But is always worked on my GNex without issues. Dam dam dam

I'm hoping they figure it out & update PDANet/FoxFi. When my Razr first got Jelly Bean, it broke FoxFi. A few weeks later, and it worked again following an update. The app developers need some time to find workarounds.

I ended up doing the one touch root just so I could edit the permissions for the mobile hotspot. Totally worth it and super easy.

Me too, and I un-rooted after changing the digit. Works flawlessly. I added a toggle widget, so I can turn the tethering on & off super quickly as well.

Easy tether pro. Its usb or bluetooth but works great.

I would suggest doing some research. Its easy to root the droid maxx. If you do that you can do another hack that let's you use the stock mobile hotspot app.

Are you guys referring to this [Root/Write Protection Bypass] Droid Ultra/Maxx/Mini - xda-developers as the "one touch root"?

If so, how are you unrooting? what i've read in that thread so far is that it requires flashing fxz or something else. While I can probably figure that out, I'd rather not.

My ultimate goal is to find a way to allow me to do wifi tethering (without adding it to my plan, i'm cheap and scared I'd lose my grandfathered data and discounts), yet still be able to receive OTA updates. I've evaluated the other things I use root for and I think I could live without those if my primary goals are met.

Which root and unroot program did you use that was one touch if you don't mind me asking? Would like to get my phone to teather on unlimited but don't know if I wanna root anymore.

But when you unroot you have to flash stock firmware so how does it not change the entitlement check back?

You're not flashing different firmware when you root, you're just gaining access to system files temporarily.

Can you do this edit and use the native hotspot if you are grandfathered unlimited, or am I still stuck waiting on FoxFi?
