I posted this in the carrier section of the forums, but it doesn't look like it gets much action. Hopefully some of you might have some advice.

"Anyone know if you buy a phone on Verizon and then exchange it for another one if that is the phone you then have to keep? Policy says one exchange, but can you just take the phone back? A friend bought a storm2, then exchanged for an Eris and now wants the Droid. Anyway for him to do this? (still within the 30 days if that matters)"

you can switch phones within the 30 days but you will have to pay the 35$ restocking fee if you change devices.

I think that applies just one time, so you can upgrade a phone...decide you want a different one and exchange it (with the restock fee). Looks like that would be it though since policy says 1 exchange of device. I don't know if he could just go into a store and hope a supervisor there could approve one more exchange.

I was thinking he could just take it back and activate his old phone and then go back and get the Droid. Don't know if that is allowed though.

if you are a VIP

If you are a VIP at verizon, they can waive the first restocking fee if you decide to change devices. They did it for me.

So you think he will be able to just go in the store and exchange the phone again even though he has already exchanged it once?

from what i recall.. you can return the phone within 30 days... if you get the same thing (ie exchange) then there is no restocking fee... if you return it and get a different phone within 3 days of that return.. then you could be subject to that restocking fee... so you could wait the 3 days.. or see if they would waive the fee... worst they can say is no and hit you with the fee... its better than being stuck with a phone you dont like for 18mo.

Thanks, but what if you did all that and then wanted to exchange again or just return the phone? I just don't know how strict they are on the one exchange per upgrade thing.

well.. my story was like this..

a couple weeks ago i bought an htc imagio (WinMo FTL!) and took it back within 24 hrs... then waited till the droid came out and got it. it is my assumption that if i took this phone back.. i could get a different one if i so chose... its basically a separate transaction so i don't see why not.

although.. this is speculation on my part and i could be way off, LOL.. best thing to do is call a store and ask someone... be sure to write down the name of who you talked to and what time you called... that way you can refer to it and have something to back it up... "I spoke with Joe Shmoe @ store xxx at 4:12pm and he said I could" .. helps if you have to appeal to a manager.

Okay, so here is what I found out.

Let's say it is time to upgrade and you do the following:

Upgrade to Storm 2 then exchange that for an Eris. According to policy you can't do anything else with that Eris, return it or exchange it. EXCEPT...you can exchange 1 more time but only for the original phone you bought when you upgraded...so in this (my friend's) scenario you could only go back to the Storm 2.

The restocking fee is more liberal, you can usually weasel out of that if you have a cool rep.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

Definitely interesting fact, thanks for checking it. I wonder if that is across the board, or if it is representative dependant.....IE many times the rules are different from store to store, and rep to rep.

had upgraded from a Curve to the Storm 1. Had many many issues with the Storm, so after a number of exchanges, they allowed me to do an early upgrade to the Tour which I anticipated paying extra, they didn't charge me.

The Storm 2 came out, I walked in anticipating the possibility of paying full retail. I asked the rep what she could do for me, she ended up selling it to me at the 1 year price and got the manager approval....they do not normally do that. I was liking Storm 2 ALOT more than Storm 1 but I could just not get the typing down without errors.....

I replaced the Storm 2 with the Droid using the Worry Free Guarantee, she kept the 1 year pricing but charged me the restocking fee which I was not going to give an argument being she saved me so much money on BOTH devices to begin with.

I think that if I walked into most stores and tried to get those discounts, I wouldn't get them based on a lot of feedback I have heard through here and Crackberry, which makes me wonder if I had brought the Droid back to go to a Storm 2 again.....they would let me? Or would that depend on the store I walked into. Thats why the advice to write down the reps name and the time called is very good advice. By the way I have no plans to do that EVER just a hypothetical ;) Love my Droid....I am finding this be the best phone I have ever owned.
