Need help setting up IMAP email account!

I have a Desire HD, and I love it but I am having problems with my email.
My incoming settings are fine, and I get mail, but I cannot send mail out unless I am in my schools wi-fi network. On my BlackBerry, I just put my email and password to my school email account in, and it was done automatically, I could send and receive email immediately. It is very difficult to set up on my new phone. I even went to internet support at my university and they couldn't help me. I don't know if I am supposed to change the outgoing settings or what? Mail successfully sends when I am at my school under its wi-fi network. Is it a security thing? Does anybody have any help/recommended settings? Thanks

Does the school have instruction on how to set-up your home computer for IMAP? I'd start with that. Even better, confirm they work on your personal computer when NOT at the campus. Once we have a working computer, I can better help you with what settings go where in the phone.

It sounds like the outgoing server (SMTP) you are using is their "inside" server, i.e., that server is only reachable from the school's network, or WiFI.

I access my school account by going on my school website, usually. I don't use a client, I just use my browser. I will go in to support and see if they can help me set up on my computer (using Thunderbird I guess) and then I will go from there.
