Need Help with AOSP toro build

I am trying to modify the stock Messaging app to include threaded group texting. I was able to build for full_eng and get the emulator to load the generic device. But when I try to build for full_toro-eng or full_toro-userdebug, the emulator just shows a black screen and my android build does not load.

I also tried to load the Mms.apk from my builds on to my GNex but the phone does not recognize it as an app and it won't show up in my drawer.

Can anyone help me with these issues?

I know the first time the emulator loads up a build it takes FOREVER....are you sure you're letting it go for long enough?
