Need help with rooting new phone

I am a complete n00b, but I've been reading these threads. I have a NEW Optimus V.

1. So I understand that I have to root the phone with Gingerbreak apk not zip using this link

2. But using a new phone led me to this

I don't want to deal with getting a black screen.

So here's my question which recovery should I use? Using that same link, the choices are

new: IHO recovery with kernel from new OV stock recovery
iho-vm670-X-recovery-40143, flashable zip:
iho recovery, .img file:
xionia_kernel_clockwork-3024


Do I use the Xionia Kernal Clockwork recovery and flash_img?


3. Also I wanted to use this ROM, IHO-Purity-X

Can someone give me the step by step, because I'm kinda lost. They say NOT to use ROM Manager for some reason.

Yes, use the gingerbreak method. It may take you up to 5 tries or more to get it to work. As for the recovery, I personally use the xionia_kernel_clockwork-3024 recovery. Now, as for the ROM, is there a specific reason your using an almost dated ROM?? Don't get me wrong, I'm always telling members to try each and experiment with the ROM's and find the one that 'fits' you. But there are others that are more up to date like the BobZhome and BackSide ROM. Using that recovery and either of those ROM's you will not have to worry about the black screen. But please read so you understand everything before you delve into it. That was my very first mistake. I've learned and an spreading my "wisdom" of reading. Good luck!!
