Need help with voicemail on unlocked phone

Hi all. I have an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S9 plus (Verizon). I have the basic "voicemail" app and I'm able to check my messages. But, when people call in they're only hearing the automated "Your call has been forwarded to an automated messing system 800-123-4567 is not available..." message instead of the personalized message I've recorded directly from "Voicemail" app. How do I make it where callers hear my message instead of the generic automated message?

Check with your carrier, it's their voicemail serer. But you should be able to just call your voicemail (usually by long-pressing 1 on the phone dial) and choosing to leave a greeting message.

Thank you, I'll try that first, and if that doesn't work I'll call Verizon.
