Ok so im new at this rooting stuff. I want a custom rom so that I can overclock, I have the older version of the lg optimus v(I think. Android 2.2.1 means older version I think correct me if im wrong). My questions are what rom should I use, and do I have to wipe my fone and loose all apps and game saves?(if I dont have to please explain how), and can I use rom manager since I have the older optimus v?(if 2.2.1 means older version of the rom)

Go here The Truth About ROM Manager - Android Forums
and here Do not Factory Reset your Rooted Phone - Android Forums
Back up all your apps with Titanium Backup or Free Uninstaller(has an auto app backup mode) which I think is better as it saves every app thats installed on your phone. This means if you install an update that doesn't work to well you can go back and install the previous version, or one before that even.

You will lose your screen layout( where you put your apps on each screen) unless you have a custom launcher that has an option to save the layout. The stock launcher doesn't.

You can try titanium, but a lot of apps don't migrate from 2.2 to 2.3, if you use any of the custom roms, overclock will be available. Don't use rom manager! Its not reliable, and there is a lack of support for it. Follow the simplified root and custom roms sticky thread and you should have no problem

Always push recovery within the rom and rom from within recovery. That way if one gets flashed badly, or something happens it'll be fine. Always make a backup. Keep a extra copy too is possible.

Read " The Truth About ROM Manager" . This app works great for all Novatek screens, which the OP has if he has the old 2.2.1 OS.

ROM Manager has great support and is updated regularly to fix minor bugs.

I've never had a problem restoring any app when going from a Froyo ROM to a Gingerbread ROM.

Any advice given should be based on actual experience, not speculation and hearsay.

Free Uninstaller is the name of the app.
You install a recovery from either a terminal emulator on your phone or a command prompt on your pc. This process uses the flash_image in the system which is why it's also called flashing instead of installing, same for ROM's and themes.

pushing is where you install a file or img to your sd card while it's still installed in the phone and connected to your pc. You have to use your command prompt.

You can just transfer a file or img to your sd card using the option that pops up in the phones task bar when you plug it into your pc. This is a USB symbol. When you drag the pulldown you will see " select to transfer files". Select it, then touch the box under the Android with the USB connection for an arm. A window will appear on your pc with the contents of your sd card listed. Just drag and drop files and img's to the window.

You have to go into your custom recovery to flash(install) a ROM,Kernel, patch, some themes, and updates.

@andyopie150 I have 2.2.1so with rom manager I flashed the clockwork mod recovery, now which rom do I downlod, and after download what do I do or is it simple and I can figure it out, and after downloading and running the rom will all my old stuff be there with out me having to do anything?(any one can answer)

And do I need to change versions of clockwork mod recovery or rom manager app?based on andyopie's link in his first comment about truth of rom manager, and do I need titanium pro? Or will free version work?

Well to start off... you need to make sure you actually have really flashed the recovery. Shut the phone off and hold down the BACK button, the VOLume DOWN button, and the power button until the LG logo pops up and then disappears. If the screen remains black, rom manager didn't do the trick for you. I would suggest not downloading roms from rom manager, instead download either harmonia2, or the BACKside rom, or one of the numerous roms loacated in the rooting and roms subforum. Titanium will work fine to back up your apps, from my experience its never failed. Could someone verify if I said the right thing or not?

So I download cm7 and titanium pro, now what?

Install titanium pro. Make a backup of your apps with TB but do not backup system data.

Head over to the IHO thread check the post on the front page by Jerryscript that explains how to install the rom.

Follow that exactly, and I mean exactly.

Once you boot back and get your google account setup goto the market and redownload titanium backup.

As long as you have the license on your sd card it will register and let you do a batch restore.

Click on the menu button then select batch, once it gives more choices scroll to restore then restore missing apps.

Now I have to ask why are you wanting to overclock? If it is to play a game...the amount you can overclock the Optimus V is not going to get you where most of those games want or need.

And I cant find that iho post I know im a noob can you post a link? and is that thread for optimus v's or androids in general

You can also try this tread http://forums.androidcentral.com/op...2-iho-gingerbread-see-first-post-updates.html
Since your using ov 2.2.1 I would stop using rom manager and flash the recovery recommended in this tread. Once you have download the recovery rename it vm670nh.img and flash with an app called flashimagiegui.apk once you open the app you have to browse for your recovery"your new recovery will be in your Download folder", after that select wipe cache and delvic, after select flash image once you flashed the recovery reboot your phone.
1,2,3 steps you have flashed a new recovery

!!hormonia 2 GB!!!
CWM base recovery 4.0.1.5
First phone: LG optimus v 2.2.1 froyo

Warning: the "Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery" Option in ROM Manager is borked at this time. When selected if you got "LG Optimus C LW690" under the "Confirm Phone Model" , and you continued with the install, then it did not install the recovery and you have no flash_image in your /system/bin. This is absolutely necessary for installing the recovery and ROM.
DO NOT PROCEED WITH ANYTHING UNTIL YOU HAVE THE PROPER flash_image INSTALLED.

Use the flash_image GUI or download and manually install the flash_image and recovery from a terminal emulator.

Hey Andy, did you know you can make a flashable zip for Titanium Backup? Dig into the options, and there's one to create update.zip. Then you can flash it with gapps to speed along the restore operations. I only noticed a couple of weeks ago.
