need some help

ok it seems to me that iam doing something wrong. iam trying to root my hero i think i have done it already but iam not sure i have loaded my sd card with what i thought where rom but iam now guessing that this is not the right stuff to do.i keep getting like screen savers type stuff.i think i got the how to load and flash into recovery part right but know i need i guess its called a file.if anyone can point me in the right way i would be thankful.

You have to root the Hero first before you can flash a ROM to it. Rooting just gives you full access to the phone and the ability to flash new ROMs, your current stock ROM will still be there. You can use a program that roots it for you or follow the directions in the HTC Hero root section of the forum.

Once you've rooted the phone you want to download a new ROM and stick it on your SD card, but leave it packed in the zip file (.zip, .rar). Turn the phone off and then while turning it on hold down the "Volume Down" and "Home" keys until the recovery menu pops up. You'll want to wipe the cache and dalvik(sometimes it doesnt work, no worries), or wipe data/factory reset if you want to instead. Then go to Apply SDCard: choose and pick the ROM out of the list it gives you. It will flash the ROM and then you'll need to reboot.

It can take a while for the reboot process to update everything.
