Need to backup to root...need to root to backup...?

So I wanna root my Nexus 5 but it's gunna wipe all my data so I want to back it up, but to do a full backup it seems I need to root my phone?

Can anyone recommend a good method of backing up my phone before rooting it? The least amount of set up possible is what I'm hoping for.

Also, once rooted what is the best method of updating the OS?

It is unlocking the bootloader that will wipe everything. Do you have game saves that you don't want to lose, or is everything able to transfer to your PC?

It's more just resetting up all my prefs to get the phone back to where I want it.

I copied the entire folder structure of my phone on to my computer.

Just looking for a simple copy and paste way to get it all back the way it was.

May not be that simple, but, once you unlock and root, you pretty much won't have to do it again.

If the bootloader is already unlocked, you can boot into a custom recovery without flashing it. That way you can make a backup, let's say using TWRP, and then still remain completely stock so you can take OTA updates and such. To get your backup back, all you'd have to do is reboot into TWRP using a command prompt and flash the backup. It's the way I've always done it when I want to remain completely stock but have a backup, including EFS.
