Need to run HTC Sync to Update to 2.1?

Do I have to run HTC Sync in order to update my phone to 2.1?

I have already downloaded the update, but am at work and don't want to add Sync to my work computer. Is it necessary for the update?

I only ask because the install instructions say to run it, but I am not sure if they just recommend it for backing up contacts first.

I think you need to install it so you know you have the drivers needed.Icould be wrong.

no you dont need it, i installed fine without it.
