go here, user said it worked for his Thunderbolt & i can confirm the Dialer code does open the hidden menu on my Thunderbolt

HTC Desire Hidden Menu | AMJ Community Forum

you're basically going into the phone & telling it to manually switch over to something like CDMA only, or EvDo only

scroll down, see the SetPreferred Network Type--from which you can choose what Network type the phone will then use

Network Type options:
CDMA auto (PRL)
CDMA only
EvDo only
CDMA + LTE /EvDo auto
LTE MODE

these options are shown--and any one of them can be chosen.

to clarify/summarize: Go into testing mode by dialing *#*#4636#*#* > phone information > Scroll down and Select preferred network type to be "CDMA auto (PRL)" rather than the default "CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto" (thanks PandaPaul)

not responsible if this hurts your phone---putting it out there that there is in fact a way to switch radios

Edit: note, it also says
"GSM SERVICE: in service"----kind of interesting

Update: Cory, i updated this post to include the missing information

The link you pointed to describes how to view things, but doesn't say what you would need to do.

As far as battery life goes: it isn't being impacted just because you don't have 4G service where you're at. It's no different than 3G phones, where when you are in a 1X area, you are not using battery life because your phone is 3G capable.

Now, if you are getting a 4G signal, and want to turn it off, then yes it would be nice to have a toggle.

I think the concern is that the phone is using battery searching for a 4g signal. Which does happen with 1x to 3G. People want to turn it off so that it is not constantly searching for 4g and draining the battery.

updated it so it should be full of the information---but hopefully HTC pushes a toggle for it.

my guess is that, since Panda said he had a toggle, Verizon is using the usage statistics to gauge tiered data pricing. but that's for another thread.

To those who have switched to the CDMA auto (PRL) option, can you guys confirm that everything else seems to be working except for 4G?

I'd test myself, but I won't have my phone until later this afternoon when it is delivered

Hey guys the reason why we can talk and surf over 3g is because of the sim.

If you disable lte i dont think things will work correctly.

I can confirm it works and all is well (CDMA Auto PRL)

There is a reason that the 4g toggle isnt on shipping devices. That function will be enabled at a later time. if you are not in a 4G area then it shouldnt affect the battery life much.

Are you able to divulge the reason? I know you tweeted a lot about turning off 4G when not using it to save battery.

I'm right on the border of 4G.. everyonce in awhile my phone gets 4G in my house for about 5 minutes at a time, then goes back to 3G.

And even though I'm right next to where it says there is LTE coverage on the vzw map, I'm more often on 3g when I have been in those areas. :/

Hopefully they get that toggle out soon!(skype too! haha)

Thanks for all the replies, and yea its just that the phone is constantly searching for 4g which has to be cumbersome on both the phone and battery. And I'll try the trick when I get off work!
