I figured it was a longshot, but I tried installing the new netflix.apk. It doesn't work on the Optimus S

EDIT:
Ok, looks like some people have had success getting it to run on the Optimus by setting the Build.prop to one of the supported phones. Looks like I will be rooting this weekend. Post if you have had success getting this to work on the Optimus S.

Netflix works on Optimus V

how far?

how far did you get? I don't have a netflix login, but i got to login screen. I also saw people are not getting it to stream and that it does little more than the original netflix que app.

EDIT: OK so when trying to play you get errors. I don't have stagefright enabled, but i wonder if we enabled it and changed our device to say it was an EVO....

List of phones supported:
1. HTC Incredible with Android 2.2
2. HTC Nexus One with Android 2.2, 2.3
3. HTC Evo 4G with Android 2.2
4. HTC G2 with Android 2.2
5. Samsung Nexus S with Android 2.3.

working fine on my phone :) some movies have a green bar at the top, but it's minor

I am running the HTC Glacier and using those instructions, I was able to get into the Market and download Netflix with 0 problems. Opened the app, signed in... randomly selected a movie to play. I could hear it play for about 3 seconds, and the timer went on then crashed after about 10 seconds. This method should work on higher phones. Great instructions :)

see they used nexus. I changed all of mine to the EVO and it didn't work. And netflix uses silverlight not flash. gonna try the nexus changes.

Video doesn't play on my phone but the app works. Phone isn't rooted. I get the "The Netflix service is not available on your device" error.

I just used appinstaller to install the apk.

The news all over androidpolice, andreddit, etc. is that if you change your build.prop (root users only) to think you have the HTC Vision, it works great. I do not have Netflix though, so someone else will have to try this.

ok i got one.
anyone that did this build.prop edit, did it break the camera for you? suddenly my camera isn't working and i'm trying to figure out why

Yes, I get an error "Cannot connect to camera". Click ok and the app exits.

I wonder what else might be broke!:eek:

i restored my rom then went into the build.prop and only edited "ro.product.model" to "Nexus One" and "ro.product.manufacturer" to "HTC"
now both netflix and the camera work

This worked great! Thanks
I simply edited my build.prop as you indicated, rebooted and now both the camera and Netflix are working.

Can someone post a link to the apk they used.

Thanks
it's the long route, but you can download it from the market this way:
edit your build.prop to:
Code:
ro.product.model=Nexus One
ro.product.brand=google
ro.product.name=passion
ro.product.device=passion
ro.product.board=mahimahi
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC
then reboot
search for and download the netflix app from the market
then go back into your build prop and edit to the following:
Code:
ro.product.brand=Sprint
ro.product.name=thunderc
ro.product.device=thunderc
ro.product.board=thunderc
then reboot again.

Fyi xda has a Netflix apk with the check disabled so you don't need to edit the build.prop
