I copied the file and overwrote the file, but the phone froze. I had to do a battery pull. After it fired up, I got a got Android is updating notice and Universal Search is working again.I'll test it .
Edit: Took me a while but moving the search app to the system folder worked but not as expected. It wouldnt overwrite the original file. Had to delete the original google search. Then copy the new file into the system folder. After that I clicked on the file and hit install. It came up with can't install. Rebooted into cwm. Fixed permissions and restarted. Now the search is working even after a reboot.

What app did you use to copy the old search apk to the system folder. I am unable to get it to work. I am not rooted.
Thanks
I didn't. I replaced the APK on the phone with the one posted here. Installed it from the folder and it worked perfectly.Thanks. So when you reboot the phone do you need to re install it?

edit. I just uploaded the file here. Just install the old .apk once you did your update and it should work
...
if you are rooted you replace it with the one in the system and change permissions, which im still not sure how to do yet
Boot into cwm recovery choose advanced menu and choose fix permissions .

AT&T is removing it as well. Those in the know say all it is a matter of time before the other carriers push an update to remove it as well.
