New 5G BlackBerry in 2021.

We have to remember that these companies have tons of data telling them what people want. They will not take chances and lose money for being stupid. If anything they will move forward with things like smart watches, glasses, etc.

When slab sales start to fall dramatically due to lack of innovation, it forces them to start thinking outside the box.

Foldables, sliders, etc are part of that "out-of-the-slab" risk taking.

Since the beginning of the explosion of the all-touch smartphone, I feel like their main goal was to fit the biggest, brightest display with the least amount of bezels.

Now that they've reached that goal, time to start experimenting elsewhere, because adding more and more camera lenses only work for so long before people want something more.

Outside the box is moving forward, not backwards.
You are not paying attention if you think sliders are going to be the next big thing. I don't own a smart watch but cannot deny they are the future.

The retail business from both software and hardware is bundling just like super expensive value meals. The main reason watches or automobile systems are so important will be even more is the way it locks the user in more and more to Apple or Google for instance. I don’t own a smart watch either but my two of my five kids have one and I’m sure the other three at some point will too. The health aspects seem the draw for them as young athletes..

I agree. As this merge continues it will bring more and more features we never dreamed of. Health is a big one.

Who says a PKB is necessarily "moving backwards" ?

A fixed PKB that "steals" screen real estate might be considered to be, but that doesn't mean other ways of implementing it are necessarily "moving backwards".

People are very accepting of it when it comes to computers and tablet attachments, so there really is no reason it can't be cleverly implemented in a smartphone, by bringing MORE functionality (shortcuts etc) and MORE screen real estate when typing, instead of less.

Because keyboards in general, especially pkb's, are on their way out. Look at where technology is going. It's not typing on a tiny keyboard.

Agreed. Maybe some niche gadgets like an special case using a BT PKB or whatever. Just maybe.

Who says a PKB's keys are necessarily smaller than their VKB counterparts?

Keyboards in general aren't going anywhere, who wants to only be able to voice dictate as a form of input?

Like that's gonna work well in loud environments, or when you don't want everyone around you to hear what you're dictating

I’m going to take the advice of the others and let you spit into the wind if you like. History will tell us, again, what people want.

I would describe it as awkward. When closed it was thick. When open it felt flimsy. I just never got used to it.

I would handle it too gingerly if it felt fragile. That is too bad. Definitely puts a damper on the experience.

It's probably more about the size of the device, how it's carried and used. For many people, only ever used to VKB, any PKB device seems awkward, if device is used for more than just texting or emailing.

I watch the behavior of my daughters and when sending emails, important posts and replies, it becomes a MacBook task rather than iPad or iPhone task.

Agreed, they believe in compromise or need, but the solution is viewed different. Both girls independently responded that a PKB attachment on their iPad would be the preferred or at least a better solution.

My son, their brother, is ten years older, they're 14 and 16, he's 25, said the same thing when I got his first iPhone for him 11 years ago. Back then it was iPhone and laptop.

It was less about size back then but the bigger screen when the VKB slid down for media consumption. Today, my son is a senior manager in a huge freight terminal. He lugs around company laptop in a company backpack. He just bought the iPhone 9/SE2 to replace his iPhone 7 this past summer.

Happier with the added screen but didn't want any bigger. His dual carry situation on and off the job is either company or personal laptop and iPhone but no tablet. Asked me about iPad since Apple was promoting with the iPhone purchase and his sister's and I have. Even though he's got disposable income, he couldn't figure out a use case..

These are the situations facing mobile technology everyday. The compromise versus the usage and how expense is justified.

Only facts I have mixed in with opinions. I'm waiving the White Flag boon .... Not arguing, just discussing

;-)

I would personally much rather carry around a slider that offers both the full screen and a physical keyboard (which wouldn't ever get in the way of said full screen) instead of having to also carry around a laptop.

Same reason for usefulness of a foldable, you can have MORE functionality that still fits in the same pocket.

Most people don't have to carry around both devices 24/7, only when needed.
I recently moved to a Chromebook. 15" screen, super light and they're getting better by the day. I'd much rather use it for emails, surfing, etc. than a tiny phone.

Yes but it still needs a bag to be carried around

Nah, they make sleeves. It has excellent battery life so you don't need a charger for the scenario I'm speaking of.
I believe you but even in a sleeve that means one hand is gonna be taken by carrying it around.

Having a pocketable device has serious advantages. I bet the upcoming Astro Slide by Planet Computers will be one heck of a productivity tool.
