I'm waiting on my droid X, my first android phone from BB. I have been reading all kinda of android os/phone posts and have a question. I read somewhere that android 3.0 (gingerbread?) will be coming out the end of the year? didn't 2.2 just come out?

I ask this because I remember reading an article a few months back about how good wants to stop coming out with a ton of OS and get most phones running the same one instead of having all different versions floating around ala BB.

gingerbread will be out sometime, but i wouldnt stress it until 2.2 actually sees a widespread release. there will always be persistent rumors of the new os, but google has said they are trying to cut back on the number of firmware releases they come out with and just making each release a bigger deal. i wouldnt expect gingerbread until 2011 at the earliest

I have heard gingerbread would be 2.3 or 2.5. I have never heard it referred to as Android 3.0.

There's a lot of numbers floating around. 2.3, 2.5, 2.6, 3.0 blah blah. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes to 3.0 with the UI customizations they're going to make instead of it being viewed as an incremental upgrade.

Gingerbread... Booo!!! :( :(

I would have like Gelato as a better code name..

its hard to say exactly what it will bring about but from blogs i have read it is supposed to be more or less a visual overhaul. a whole new UI or at least a lot that will be edited from the previous version. the only thing is that these are rumors are not facts, just assumptions by other people.

No, Gingerbread is going to be packing alot of what they talked about at I/O a couple months ago. Namely, all of the core apps, like the browser and music player, will be "detached" from the core OS like Google Maps Navigation and a number of other Google apps are now. This will allow Google to update these without relying on hardware manufacturers/carriers to push an OTA update and will go a LONG way towards ending version fragmentation. Also, they will be enabling the sending of intents to your phone from the web browser. The example they gave was creating a route in Google Maps on the computer then sending it to your phone with the click of a button.

Also, we may see music streaming over 3G or some kind of improved music store.

In short, Gingerbread will be a HUGE update.... I am just not sure if it will be 2.3, 2.5, 3.0, or something else.

After Gingergread (Just for fun)

So the Android 2.2 is codenamed FroYo, and the next one is pretty certainly Gingerbread. Just for fun, does anyone want to place their bets on what's coming up after GB?

I'm putting my money on either Hazelnut or Honey Cake (I start thread, therefore I get two guesses).

This is just for kicks, so throw out what you think (or want) Google to name the far distant future of the Android OS. And be fair, everyone gets one guess, and if you get it right, you win two internets.

Assuming it's a huge update, then it would likely be 3.0. The visual overhaul rumors are attributed to Google recently hiring Matias Duarte, Palm's head of User Interface. Bringing in a man like that would probably mean that they plan on overhauling the UI of Android, something that could make fewer manufacturers put skins on top of the stock UI. This would reduce the amount of fragmentation, which isn't a bad thing.

Gingerbread is not 3.0 it is gonna be 2.5 or 2.6, 3.0 wont come out till next Google i/o it wouldn't make sense for them to skip all the way to 3...so this is not true what so ever.

I don't know if a better UI is going to necessarily mean fewer manufacturer skins. Companies like HTC and Moto like being able to distinguish their phone from their competitors, so I would expect to see some form of skins and brand-specific widgets for a while.

does it really matter what number it is? i mean really as long as its packed with goodies and improvements thats all that should matter, oh and also that the carriers and manufacturers don't take 6months to a year to get it out once its released.

oh and my vote for the H version is Honey Bun.
