New Captivate Owners / Android Users - Introduce Yourselves Here!

I have been a blackberry guy for quite a while as well. I don't miss my Storm one bit. I love the screen and everything. I thought I would miss the push button screen on the storm... but I don't. I am right now running the JVK 2.3.3 Rom and just screwing around. lol

Recently upgraded to the Captivate from a 3 year old Nokia 6126 flip. This is my first personal smartphone, though I've been messing with them for about five years, through my work. I simply never felt the need to get one for my own, but my little Nokia was finally wearing out, and I felt it was a good time to upgrade, especially since I had a chance to mess with the Captivate before buying one. I didn't think I would like it at first, but it started to grow on me as I got comfortable with the soft keyboard. I really like it, now! Makes me think of a Linux Desktop, like Mandrake or Redhat. Fun stuff.

Just got a Captivate off Craigslist for 150. He had just purchased it in Jan, and it's in top notch condition. Cool phone, now time to hack it.

Hello I have had my Captivate for a few weeks now and it is quite the learning curve coming from a physical keyboard. It came with 2.2 but my girlfriends Samsung Captivate 4G came with 2.1, how do I update it for her? I am looking forward to getting better at typing and getting some cool apps!

Newbie here

I have had my captivate for a few days and as the screen name says it all I am already CAPTIVATED! my first smartphone was the droid incredible. I thought it was awesome, but the Captivate goes beyond, I don't think I will get tired of this one any time soon!
Lookin' forward to learning my way around!!

I have had my Captivate for about 8 Months and I am very happy with it. I have been lurking on this forum for 3-4 months learning what I could. Thank you to everyone who has posted tips, tricks and just plain helped out others on here..

Was up? I had my captivate phone for 4 months now and got to say for my first smart phone i love it. Just wanted to find out how to get the most out of my phone besides upgrading it.

I'm here

Hello all, ok so I am new to Android. I am coming off of iOS. Had the iPhone for 2 years and have made the switch. At the moment this is not a "permanent" switch. I have about two months to decide if I want to continue with Android or revert back to iOS.
A couple of things I have noticed. The phone is ALOT faster (Samsung Captivate). Not sure if it all the hardware or a more stable OS. So that is a definite plus.
One problem I have is coming off of a jail-broken iPhone to a stock Captivate. Not sure yet how I will want to proceed.
Android seems to have more functionality and customization out of the box, which I like. And it's integration with Google is nice (albeit maybe a little over the top at times) because I use Google for almost everything.

So, anyway, there you have it and there you are. I look forward to exploring Android and making the determination.

Thank You

Hey everyone! My name is Russ and I a first-time Cappy user. Just got it the other day and it is: rooted, tethered and de-lagged. Not bad for someone with just computer skills!

Re: New Captivate Owners / Android Users - Introduce Yourselves H

Hey all,
New Android convert here...Got tired of the same old boring iOS screen, so when it was time for an upgrade I went and checked out some droids and decided on the Captivate. Loving it so far.

Re: New Captivate Owners / Android Users - Introduce Yourselves H

Hello, folks.

First, let me apologize in advance to moderators if there's a specific place to start these "new android user" threads.

Second, I'm sure everyone wants to know the circumstances which led me down the Android path.

I have an iPhone 3 GS, 32 GB. It has served me quite well over the past year and a half. I bought it as at the upgrade discount price in July of 09, jailbroke it, kept iOS 3.1.3 and abstained from any iOS updates during all this time. Since that time I was in smartphone heaven. My phone did exactly what I wanted it to do, and other than not being able to add attachments to my emails in a conventional manner, I never had any complaints

About two weeks ago, I shut down my phone, and when I restarted it, nothing happened. Soft bricked. I had to restore my phone, and was forced to upgrade to iOS 4.2. My jailbreak is gone, and my phone is running a little sluggishly. I am available for an upgrade, but even before a couple of weeks ago, I was interested in getting the iPhone 4. One problem. When I purchased my 3 GS, Even at the upgrade discount price ($300), I bought a case, a screen protector, and after purchasing an Apple Care package, I was out nearly $500. I wasn't prepared to do the same a year and a half later (because if I was gonna get the new iPhone, it was going to be the 32 GB model).

Upon the iOS 4.2 fiasco, I was confronted with the upgrade issue once again. Then, I asked myself:

Yes, the iPhone 4 has new features (well, new in the iPhone universe), and is a hardware upgrade, but it's still basically the same user interface. Do I really want to stare at iOS for another year and a half to two years? No, I don't. I'm bored with it.

Second, everyone has one, and yes, I understand it's a great phone, and unbelievably easy to use. I know this. But, I don't want to bah it up with the rest of the flock anymore. I don't want to be like everyone else. It's just part of my nature. Go against the grain and what not, and while it won't be the case in the future, I like that Android isn't absolutely everywhere you look. I also like that you need to work at making the Android experience enjoyable. I get that ultra nerd sense of accomplishment when I get my phone working the way I want it to.

So, I check out CNET, bring up their top phones for AT&T list, and see the Captivate. I check out the review, and the specs, and go digging around the interweb for additional info. I go to the AT&T store to play around with it, and of course, the demo model isn't going to be a very good representation of what the actual user experience will be, but I liked it, regardless.

AT&T has the phone at $199 at the upgrade discount price. I saw the Captivate at Wal Mart for $100. I decided I would hold off until after christmas to get my phone, because I would still need a microSD card, a case, a charger, and a screen protector.

I then see an advertisement on the net for Amazon. They're selling the Captivate for 1 cent (yes, .01 in American currency). I go to the Amazon Wireless site, but the 1 cent price is for new users only. For users available for an upgrade, the price is $40. After seeing another couple of good deals on Amazon, my girlfriend bought me the phone, a cheap case, car charger, and screen protector (which will be replaced a little later...I just wanted something to keep my phone from harm until I can get what I really want), and a 16 GB microSD card as my Christmas present, and all for $70.

My phone should be arriving early this coming week.

I'm going to be rooting my phone, along with flashing it with a custom ROM, so I think I can work my way through the common issues some users face with the Captivate.

My only concern is this: One of the things I loved about my iPhone is its battery life. Two to three hours of music a day (MP3's, not streaming), about an hour talk time, approximately fifty text messages, about twenty to thirty minutes of web browsing, and sometimes an hour or so of video, and at the end of a fourteen hour day, I have approximately thirty percent battery left.

I did have 3G off most of the time, same with location services (I only turned these on when I used GPS), and had my brightness down pretty low.

Can my Captivate provide the same experience? From my understanding, the only way to toggle between 3G and 2G is to change the settings through the dialer, and honestly, I'm okay with that. It appeals to my nerdiness, but can I still have the same multimedia use that I had with my iPhone? Does it have enough battery life to last the entire day with the usage described above?

I'll still have my 3GS of course, and can continue to use it as my MP3 player, but I liked having my phone and my music in one device, and if I can still avoid carrying two devices around, it would be great.

Please let me know your opinions, and thanks in advance.

***********UPDATE*******************

Just got my Captivate last night, and it has blown my skull apart. Beautiful screen, and even on the stock ROM, it's pretty snappy. The browsing experience is outstanding, and even the GPS works fine in my part of the world. I'll be rooting and flashing this weekend. Wish me luck! In your face, that particular company named after that fruit which allegedly reduces visits to a medical physician!
I LOVE my Cappy!!! My name is NOT Snow White or Sleeping Beauty and neither have I ever played them on tv. I'll never take a bite out of the poisonous Apple...NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the Droid Iluminati! You have been assimilated. Droid Rulezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Re: New Captivate Owners / Android Users - Introduce Yourselves H

Just thought I'd come introduce myself.

I just got my Captivate today after using a simple web/text messaging phone.

I must say, in the short time I have had it, I really love this phone. It didn't take me that long to get the hang of things, as everything is well organized in the different windows.

Really looking forward to meeting some of you and learning more about my captivate as time goes on.

Re: New Captivate Owners / Android Users - Introduce Yourselves H

Folks,

Newbie here, from Central Texas, my Captivate is my first Android phone, I was a Nokia user for a long time, spent a lot of money buying some very faulty phones, lol. But it looks like Android will make up for it.

Re: New Captivate Owners / Android Users - Introduce Yourselves H

Hey everyone,

So long iphone hello droid. Love it so far. The captivate is pretty sleek and sexy in so many ways. I just found out about at&t not allowing "sideloading apps" and I'm not too happy about that. I am a big fan of Amazon and went straight for the app store just to find out I can't install it. Trying to decide whether to use android centrals sideloader or root the phone. There's probably another forum for this but if anyone reads this let me know if you have any tips. Thanks

Re: New Captivate Owners / Android Users - Introduce Yourselves H

ATT has backed off the side loading thing... I think you just have to ask them about it now. Give them a call and tell them you are trying to install the Amazon app store. They should be able to enable the option back for you now.

Re: hi all

Hello, I have been a long time palm user, just now giving up my palm pre plus. I hope i will enjoy using my new captivate when it arrives. New to android. Is the OS pretty easy to navigate? Not really sure what else to say. I look forward to my new phone.
Lol I used to own a Centro and then a Pre Plus. I'm about to get the captivate and tried it out at a few stores. The OS is pretty easy to learn (especially with TW)

Re: New Captivate Owners / Android Users - Introduce Yourselves H

Hi all
just got my captivate on Saturday after the lady in the ATT store decided to $100 bucks of the price ($150 for new service price gave it to me for $50). Went in to upgrade my wifes phone and ended up getting my upgrade elgibilty date moved up to saturday, getting a captivate and getting my son a simple phone (he is only 11) and $100 credit on our acct. My wife got the HTC Insprie 4G and i got the captivate (of course she gets the phone thats newer).

i ve had the phone for 3 going on 4 days now and im so happy that i got it, was using the moto backflip and HOLY HELL what a differance. my wife and i spent the weekend playing with our phones, me just setting up the screens, dl apps etc...my wife she was learning how to use a smartphone, its her 1st one.

im liking the live wallpaper ROFL, couldnt use it on the backflip. ive been reading the captivate is getting 2.3 anyone know when that will happen?

Re: New Captivate Owners / Android Users - Introduce Yourselves H

Right now, the only information we know about official GB for the Captivate, is that there is a leaked version or 3 in the wild. If things go down similarly to the way they did with the 2.2 upgrade, and each day that goes by makes it look more likely, we have 2-3 months before the official drop comes out. This is all just a WAG.

Re: New Captivate Owners / Android Users - Introduce Yourselves H

cool thanks for the info. i went through the update to 2.1 for the backflip and that took forever for that to offically come out. Ive seen the leaked 2.3 but i have no clue how to go about installing those or using custom roms (or whatever they are called).
