New Chromebook - What is it good for?

Can I print from It?

Through cloud print, i think. I havent tried plugging it into my printer.

Can I back up all my media from my GS3 and upload it to my BlackBerry PlayBook? I know it doesn't have windows so how do you manage files?
You can save files locally, or to Drive. It has a very basic file browser. I have no idea what you mean by backing up your GS3.

You're right - I love this thing, but have tried to explain what it is to people I show it to...blank stares & crickets chirping in the background

lol I've gotten that too when I've taken mine to show off and tried to explain that it is basically just Google Chrome and nothing else. I didn't think I'd buy another laptop after I moved most everything I do to my Nexus 7 but I just can't get over the hangup of writing on a 7-inch screen for long periods of time, even with my bluetooth keyboard that basically makes my Nexus 7 a laptop. I still prefer browsing on a conventional machine too. I'll take an optical mouse with a scroll wheel over touch screen controls any day for reading web pages.

Chromebooks might not be for everyone but I find mine very useful as a companion to my Nexus 7.

Unfortunately, the Wacom BT tablet I've tried to pair to the Chromebook fail to get added. Chromebook seems finicky about that. :(

EDIT **
On a new attempt I got my MS Bluetooth mouse to pair, AND work.

I had No idea there were so many different chromebooks. I would probably go with Samsung, because I like the brand.....and ACER products appear cheap to me. My question is I am a writer and it is exhausting getting up in the middle of the night and waiting for my desk top to boot up, frankly by that time I have forgotten what I want to write. I have a tablet but the keyboard really isn't practical for writing anything of great length. In the last week, I have just been making handwritten dialogue notes in a notebook. I like this chromebook because it boots up in 10 seconds????? Does it have Microsoft Works ability? I know about google drive, can I just do some writing on that and save it, I'd love to know if this notebook has programs that would benefit my writing. I transfer any notes I make to my desktop manuscript the following day. I appreciate any advice. thanks~:D

If you're having trouble with your desktop booting I would suggest you try Linux, you can greatly customize it to your own liking far more than Windows, and it doesn't really have that much of a learning curve.

REALLY????? sigh!!!!! I asked about the chromebook. Frankly taking my desktop into bed with me is not an option. I was so hoping for some actual feedback on the question I asked.....sigh!

My Apple wireless keyboard (bluetooth) works great but the Apple trackpad doesn't. It pairs but the pointer skips around and it stops responding at random times for about 10 seconds. I "solved" that by plugging in a wireless mouse. Smooth as can be now, just have to use the USB 3.0 port for it. The 2.0 port doesn't work as well for some reason. Odd. Also it doesn't work with my Dell monitor. It outputs the wrong resolution and the monitor says it can't use it. Other than two things I've enjoyed my time with it, even though it's only been two days. I like it best for doing things that I need a keyboard for (like this forum) but don't feel like firing up the Mac. I have my iPad mini for most things but if I'm going to do some typing and don't feel like using the HTC One, I open the lid and 10 seconds later I'm online and working.

I got the Chromebook about a week ago, and I absolutely love it. I'm not a power user, so the GApps suite works perfectly. I use it mainly to take notes in class and to do some basic word processing/web surfing when I'm out of the dorm.

I was choosing between this and the MacBook Air. I went with this not only because it was cheaper, but also because it was much smaller. You can see a size comparison here: Samsung Chromebook Review - The Pros and Cons of Google's Netbook

Yeah I got tired of waiting for anyone to actually ANSWER MY QUESTION so I just bought it.

With an attitude like that, don't expect people to fall over themselves trying to help. Reap what you sow. ;)

So what'd you get? Samsung, Acer, ...? Hows it working for you? I use mine similar to what you mentioned, immediate power-on and writing. Also use mine for cue cards when I record videos....

I ordered mine from Amazon on Tuesday and it was delivered Thursday. WOW!!! you just open the lid and it boots....love the keys, writing is so cool. Was kind of shocked that Picassa wasn't on it..aren't thet google? I wish they would hav ehad a book..instead of the quick start.but I googled what I needed and found it.....cannot believe how light this thing is...and I wrote for 3 hours with it on my lap and it never got hot. I did notice it~when u charge it..it gets a little warm, but unplugged...wow I think it's going to work out great.

BTW: my attitude?????? if someone asks a serious question and they are hoping(praying) in my case that they would get some feedback from "experts" and people just TOTALLY 100% IGNORE, the question you asked and give you some other info that has ZERO to do with your question....how is that helpful? I am not trying to be a bi-atch! but seriously if I ask about this chromebook and someone tells me try LINUX~ how is that helpful to what I asked..either they did not read my question or they just decided to toss that in.......

Who said anyone here were experts, with or without the sarcastic quotation marks.

I've owned the Samsung Chromebook XE303 (Series 3) since late January, and I really like it. If you just want to browse the internet but actually do some typing when you are doing that browsing (like posting on message boards), the chromebook is nearly perfect.

Incidentally, I also own three Android OS devices and I do NOT like Android, mainly because all 3 devices seem to have performance issues of some sort. (One of them is a pure Android OS Galaxy Nexus and the other is a nearly pure Android OS Transformer Pad 300.) I don't intend to ever buy another Android OS device unless I'm forced to do so.

I'm really looking into buying a Chromebook. I really like the fact that it comes with 100GBs of cloud storage. I like that the screen is larger than a tablet. I also am looking forward to having a device with a physical keyboard. I have used an iPad as my main computing device and it has sufficed, but the typing experience is slow.

I've been looking at the chrome books for a few weeks now on and off trying to read up on them and convince myself into trying one. Been reading through these postings and the generally positive comments have got me thinking harder on trying one. Most here appear to be discussing the Samsung. I've looked at it and the Acer at Best Buy and am undecided if there is $50 worth of reasons to select the Samsung? I know the Acer you can now get with a 16 SSD like the Samsung. To me that makes much more sense on these machines than that 320 GB standard drive.

When deciding between the $200 Acer version and the $250 Samsung version (I assume the larger HP version is not under consideration), the key things to think about are 1) weight, 2) battery life, and 3) cost. The Acer chromebook is 3.1 pounds and the Samsung chromebook is 2.4 pounds, not an insignificant difference. Additionally, the Acer chromebook has roughly half the battery life of the Samsung chromebook, or at least the 320 GB HD version did. (I'm unsure if there are any battery life differences between the 320 GB HD and 16 GB SSD Acer chromebooks.) To me, the weight and battery life made the Samsung Series 3 version worth the extra $50, but other people may feel differently.

In all seriousness, if I were you I'd go to Best Buy or someplace similar that sells the chromebooks and compare them in person. (Every Best Buy I've been in over the last 6 months has carried both the Acer and Samsung chromebooks, or more accurately has them on display.) You probably won't be able to use them too much because Best Buy does a terrible job of maintaining the display models, but you can compare the weight and look of the two chromebooks. In addition to what I said above, IMO the Samsung chromebook looks a little nicer than the Acer chromebook.

One other thing I'll note more generally about chromebooks is that I think they are distinctly superior to tablets in the "casual internet use" category that both devices fall in. The fact that chromebooks have "real" browsers and not mobile browsers is a big plus for chromebooks relative to tablets IMO (in addition to the physical keyboards, larger screen, and lower cost relative to 10" tablets).
