New Google camera 8.1 update

When it comes to app updates through the Play Store I don't think it has anything to do with phone model....it's regional, or some other metric that Google uses to make the rollout flow so it's not everyday once trying to download.

Was reading some recent reviews of the camera app in the Play Store and some folks were giving it one star, claiming the zoom slider had been removed?!? Is this true? I have the 8.1 update available but I'm not doing it if this slider removal is true.

It hasn't been removed but now there is a convenient one tap button as well to select 1X or 2X right away

Just received the 8.1 app update on my Pixel 4 XL.

Also if you pinch to zoom your one tap buttons will turn into a slider. I haven't noticed any slow down opening the app, yet.

Well, hey, thanks for the info. I never thought of pinching to get a slider. Although, I do love the fact that the zoom button has only one option now. Zooming in with the slider before was kind of annoying to me.

The update finally arrived to my Pixel 4a. It seems to lack some of the features I've seen in reviews of the Pixel 5. I'll play with it more.
Update: I did find the features I was looking for. Those are very specific to what the camera is taking a picture of.

I read about it just like the two of you did, but for my Pixel 3 XL at home, it still hasn't received any updates. I just upgraded to the Pixel 5 which has all the updates of course.

You need to update Google play services and then go to the play store and u should be able to get the update

At this point I'm on my Pixel 3 XL at home has the new Google camera 8.1 app update lol works beautifully. Unfortunately, I'll be sending the phone back soon to Verizon for $350 promotion towards my new phone that I already have!
