new hangouts problem

a little background, i have a nexus 5 on the sprint network with the newest version of hangouts installed and my google voice migrated into it. now, my google voice number is the same number as my mobile number, i did this to be able to have virtual voice mail as well as be able to answer calls from any of my devices. until now its been perfect. Now, when i try to send a text to anyone, i frequently sends it twice, once as an sms, and once as a google voice. this is very frustrating. i have tried changing the settings, selecting only send over sms, only send over google voice, and send on last used number. every case yields the same result. has this happened to anyone else? is there a way to fix this short of changing my google voice number (which i dont want to do)? thanks all
