Howdy ya'll. Im Joe and Ill admit, I like technology that works. Im finally relapsing, and I figure that if I am going to do it, I better do it right.
My last smartphone experience was a Blackberry Curve 8 something something, it had a trackball that wore out monthly, and it took years to load a web page. One year later I happily went with an incredibly stupid phone. Samsung intensity. I figured this would be reminiscent of my awesome Envy 2! (I broke the charging port) I was however very wrong.
Never in my life have I used such a worthless device. This phone makes me think back to my first attempt at building a hotrod. It looked pretty good, and it did most of what I asked, but you really have to know how to ask. The phone has a tendency to send text messages to the wrong person. (Awkwardly sending messages to my mother that are intended for my GF seems to be its favorite trick.) Other strange behaviors, i cannot capitalize a specific letter, without also paging down, I mean, WTF?!
Sidebar, VZNav has gone downhill since 2008. Hardcore. >.< Was so much better on my Envy 2 than on this phone.
Enough about that. Sorry. 20 months of angry.
I went to bestbuy to purchase a new Itouch, then I was going to sign up for clearwire mobile hotspot, and possibly buy a new GPS. $25 a month for my data and VZNav was not acceptable on this phone. My plan involved a 12v to 110v inverter I was going to install in my pickup (Where I spend most of my time) and I was just going to leave the hotspot in the truck.
While I was there I came across the cell phones, and decided to take a quick look at smart phones. I then fell in love with a Droid 3.
My only concern with a Droid is that it is not 4g. I thought it was the only choice with a keyboard and Android software. Tonight I found that the Stratosphere also exists! This has led me to registering here, and expanding my nerdy-ness.
I am Tech savy, I have done my own Jtag on the xbox, but I am NOT phone savy. I also do know how to search and have read some threads already.
What I need a phone to do (after rooting):
As far as I know the only options are the Stratosphere or the Droid 3
I dont know what the difference is between a 3g phone a 4g "LTE" phone, or why I should care, but then again, I dont know if I need a duel core processor....
Hell, my net-book only has a 1.6 Ghz single core processor and I have loved it for the last 2 years....
Other questions before buying a phone:
I really would like to just pop open the Stratosphere and solder in a faster processor
(I know, cant be done..)
Wow this post has gotten way to god damned long.....

What I need a phone to do (after rooting):
- Play Pandora.
- Have a decent navigation software
- Transmit a mobile hotspot
- Forward facing camera
- Pass a drop test (Or 12...)
- Obviously have a keyboard and be on Verizon.
As far as I know the only options are the Stratosphere or the Droid 3

Other questions before buying a phone:
- Where on this forum should I go to question Best Buy "Black tie" warranty VS Verizon warranty?
- What style cases do you use and what has your experiences been?
- Do any of you use a windshield mount? Which one?
- Anything else I need to know?
- Does anyone else predict more durability problems with a Stratosphere than a Droid?
I really would like to just pop open the Stratosphere and solder in a faster processor
