Wow! and double WoW! - if you want to keep up with the "bleeding" edge of 7" Android tablets - the announcement of the new Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7 - has got to be interesting news.

It directly takes on the new 2nd gen Google Nexus 7.2 (2013) - and just when I found out about it - PCmag.com has already done a comparison - there is a mistake in their comparison table about the Android version - but the text is fine.

The Kindle HDX 7 has a later and faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Quad-Core processor @ 2.2Ghz vs the 2013 Nexus 7 Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro Quad-Core @ 1.5Ghz - PCmag says the difference might not be so big - so have to wait for the benchmarks to truly see - nevertheless this is still a material improvement over the Nexus 7.2 which is again hailed as a benchmark for 7" tablets.

Of course the Kindle has "Fire OS 3.0" (also called "Mojito"), an Amazon-built shell over Android - so it is not native Android which can put some people off. But most will probably look to Root the Kindle so it becomes full fledged native Android.

For the photography oriented the HDX claims " perfect color accuracy (100% sRGB) "

Either way - this is all good news and should herald better things/value to come.

Actually just as interesting is the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" - same faster processor - but: 2560 x 1600 (339 ppi) screen again 100% sRGB.

Neither have microSD expansion but are also available with 32GB and even 64GB - of course more expensive than buying even the fastest rated microSD card....

Both are special priced (makes the Kindle HDX 7 the same price as the Nexus 7.2.) with: "Special Offers and Sponsored Screensavers display on Kindle Fire tablet lock screens and do not appear while you are using the device. Sponsored Screensavers include movie posters, album art, book covers, ads, and information about digital content or other products sold on Amazon.com."

This is probably moot if one roots the device?

Yeah I was taking a look at these when they were announced. I am very interested however how is the support for Rooting/flashing roms on Kindle Fires?

From what I hear there is some support but not terribly so.

Rooting by definition is "unofficial" so support depends on the device amd the author for the root.

Since they are just newly announced - Kindle Fire HDX are unlikely to have any rooting done yet.

Personally if I wanted the current "bleeding" edge hardware in the shape of a Kindle Fire HDX 7 -
I would wait for rooting to be published
then wait for the feedback to the success (or otherwise) before parting with my money.

Nevertheless these Kindle Fire HDX do show the way for more powerful and better hardware, at affordable prices .....

Wow. The "power" on this tablet matches the LG G2 (and most likely the Nexus 5) and it's as cheap as the Nexus 7? If it can be rooted and flash with stock Android I'm definitely replacing my old N7 and maybe forgo the new N5 and just get this tablet and keep using my N4.

Yep, you're far more advanced than me - but I have similar thoughts - I keep my olde Android phone (still 2.2 Fryo) to use mostly just as a phone - but with the ability to use at a pinch the power of Android apps when away from home -

Mostly I use a 7" tablet for apps etc - I am using the Hisense Sero 7 Pro for that -
it really is basically last year's Nexus 7 (2012, 1st gen) with some added enhancements like microSD, HDMI and rear camera with LED flash - all for $129 from a local WalMart.

After my experience with the nook I'm tired of rooting and ROMing I, just want a device that works. I'd rather avoid the Fire all together and get a Nexus.

I would tend to agree with you on this -
I am normally pretty cautious consumer
and to have to Root to get native Android, would not be my first choice -
that's why I said previously:

However there are lots of people who actually prefer to have another skin over native Android and are more comfortable with the Kindle shell ("Fire OS 3.0" - "Mojito")

I am not one - so I would hope with the Nexus 7.2 and now these Kindle Fire HDX -
there will be better and faster hardware for native Android at affordable prices - in the not too distant future.
Like they say (optimistically) the future looks bright.

Kindle HDX is a good deal but I need micro SD expansion slot! I have download ques lots of movies and videos when I am on a wifi network at a near by coffee shop or work Then I would save them on my device or SD card for future viewing... With 16 or 32 gigs isn't enough to store HDs videos

Good input - that's the reason I bought a lowly Hisense Sero 7 Pro -
it is basically last year's top of the heap tablet (ie: Google Nexus 7.1 - 2012, 1st gen)
but with just about all the missing features like microSD expansion, miniHDMI and rear facing camera with LED flash
- and at a price that's about half the introductory of the Nexus 7.

So instead of "bleeding" edge - I think I am more "trailing" edge.

But it's nice to keep an eye on what's coming down the line.

Processor (and hopefully performance)-wise the HDX is an improvement over even the highly vaunted 2nd gen Nexus 7.2 -
but it does lack some vital features for me too, like microSD expansion.
