New Nexus 7 with the backlight problem - how to set it up?

I got a 16GB Nexus 7 and it's exhibiting the backlight problem (no backlight, so you can just barely make out what's happening on the screen). Before the backlight went off (I know it's not broken because when the device boots I see the word 'Google' and then the Nexus logo for a moment with the backlight on) I tried connecting to a wifi network but it's not available any more, and I can't see enough on the screen to get to the brightness control. Is there a factory reset I can do to maybe fix it?

i have the same issue on 4.2.2

OP, with your nexus 7 do you have the issue when auto brightness is switched off and the brightness level maxed (use a torch to see screen)

mine seems to be related to auto brightness and brightness control whereby moving the slider below 50% switches backlight off completely.

i the meantime i'm gonna try and see if 4.3 resolves or try asus for RMA
