Hey everyone i got a 64 gb nexus 6. As soon as I started it up, it asked if I wanted to update to 6.1. I hit download then nothing happened. Now it hasn't shown back up saying I have an update. Still on 5.1. Any ideas? A couple a days ago the same thing happened with another nexus 6. I had to return it anyway because it was a 32 not a 64.

Before you start setting up any apps or data, go do a FDR (Factory Data Reset) and see if you get the update. Complete all the update before you insert a SIM.

After you do the FDR, go to Settings > About Phone > System Updates and touch "Check for Updates."

As long as you haven't inserted a SIM and registered on a network (especially AT&T), you should update to 6.0.1.

Unless....was this phone "brand new" or was it a refurb? The reason I ask, could it have been previously registered on a network? If so, that could be preventing the update.

Yeah I did that when I got the phone on. Still nothing, I thought it was new. I bought it from Amazon warehouse deals. It was on discount because the box had a little damage. I'm using a straight talk sim but using at&t towers. (don't know if that is the reason) I also read you want to hold off on the December security update until you get the update. Unfortunately I did this before I read that.

Ok, it's already registered on the AT&T network. So you have two options:

1. Wait until AT&T releases a new OTA, which could be next week, next month, or next year, or never.

2. Flash 6.0.1 yourself. It's not hard to do. You can either do the ADB method or go the Nexus Root Toolkit (NRT) method. I personally prefer NRT in this instance. It uses a GUI interface and is pretty straight forward. Since your phone is new and you don't need to save any data, flashing a new image via NRT won't take more than 10 minutes. All you need is a computer (Windows or Mac) and an internet connection, preferably a high speed connection.

Read these two posts I recently wrote on this very subject. IF you have additional questions, let me know or send me a PM.
