New Phone Time or No?

So I am due for an upgrade from my Epic. Ideally I'd like to get the Galaxy Nexus, but there of course is not a release date for it yet and it may not even be coming to Sprint from what I've read. So, any thoughts on what I should do? I don't need a new phone, but I don't just want to wait another 4 months to get a phone that is already out now anyway.

I really just want a phone that gets updated to the current operating system at some point while I own it. No, GB being updated starting tomorrow doesn't count as ICS is being released this month. I don't want to rely on a 3rd party (Samsung) to update my phone if at all possible because they're proving inept at that.

Thoughts?

Grab a Nexus S 4g if your looking for Google provided updates. Sprint will see the Galaxy Nexus at some point but I have a good feeling they will be waiting on LTE to light up and push it out then supporting LTE. Waste of time on Sammy/Sprints part to push out a WiMax version at this point.

Otherwise take your pick of SGSII or HTC's as they have been confirmed to get updated to ICS in 2012...

Personally I'm gonna rock out my NS4G until we get Galaxy Nexus with LTE because that is my gut feeling. The NS4G is already confirmed to be getting ICS very soon and its still a heck of a device.

Thanks for the input, so I guess this warrants another question:

When will Sprint have LTE? It would make sense to release the next Nexus when they get it as I'm sure there are a ton of us that want it. I'd really rather not go with the SGSII as it will probably have the same update issues I have now.

Man I wish I'd have been able to wait for the NS4G before getting the Epic...too bad my Pre died completely a bit too early.

According to the info Sprint posted they will start to light up LTE in some areas beginning mid 2012... So look for around June/July for them to start lighting up LTE if all goes as planned...

I'm sure Sprint is just as excited to get this rolling as we are because they obviously know people are aware of how well LTE performs or else they wouldn't be switching to it.

I would expect probably early 2012 we should start hearing some leaks or dirt on LTE devices to go with the light up of the LTE network.

You and me both.

I'd love it if the Sprint Galaxy Nexus is an LTE device as Paul suggests. Can't see myself investing in another phone when LTE is around the corner. Has WiMax installs completely haulted?

Personally, I'm waiting. With GB officially coming out, my Epic should hold me over well until the Nexus or similar come on Sprint. (Even though I just dropped it in a mountain stream just over the weekend.)

Yep that is my gut feeling... If I were Sprint, why rush to push out a WiMax version? Sit back, let Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile find the bugs and whatever with the Galaxy Nexus and then about the time that is all discovered and patches are in place from Google update it should just about be time for them to start lighting up LTE in limited areas..

Sounds like a good plan to me... Sprint would be in a win win situation there..

Maybe Sprint is thinking along the same lines... I dunno...

I'd definitely suggest to anyone to wait for the next big thing, that being Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy III. I bought my Epic in September 2010 and one year later and some change there's so many more devices out that are comparable or better than the Epic. Then we only had the Evo to choose from. So if ur patiente then in a couple of months we are gng to start hearing about new devices coming to Sprint. Let alone the injection of life the Epic just got by getting official Gingerbread. Yeah whatever, u'll only be on Android 2.3.5 but it's better than running a leak.

Thanks for the input everybody!

Looks like I had another option up my sleeve though, and some of you may want to hear it:

So my Epic's SD card stopped mounting to my computer (it used to work just fine) and Sprint is/was in the process of sending me a "new" phone. Apparently the Epic is on back order, so as of today I've been waiting for a week and there still isn't word on a phone coming my way. Worse yet, my GPS stopped working today. So I called customer service to see what I could do...

I told them the situation and requested a different phone as a replacement instead of waiting longer on an Epic. They granted the request!!! Gave me 3 options: Evo 3D, Nexus S, and some other Evo I don't remember. So, as of Friday-Monday I'll have a Nexus S for nothing! All of this and my upgrade will still be ready to use whenever the SGN gets to Sprint!

Another happy conversion to the NS4G clan.... Look for me when you get over to the NS4G section and on board.
