New Pixel 3a - wondering about email app

I just replaced an old and underpowered phone with a Pixel 3a, which is perfectly fine for my own purposes. So far I'm loving it; feels solid like every other phone I've ever touched, except for the one it replaced.

So far, the one configuration tweak I'd like to make but can't figure out is this:

My old phone had a gmail app of course, but there was a separate email app, that I think "just came with" the phone, and I used that app for my work email.

In buying this phone, the sales rep kind of breezily pushed me into using the gmail app to check both personal and work email (my work email goes through google's G Suite for business, so it's gmail-based).

That's okay, but after a few days of use, I'd still prefer having the gmail app for personal only, and a separate email app for my work email.

It's probably a simple question, but how do I do this? If it's any help, the prior phone was an LG K4 - if that helps track what the "resident email app" on that was.

I don't care if I have the same app; I just want a good, non-google, separate app for my work email.

Well first and foremost, what kind of email account are you looking to set up to your phone? Most pop 3 /imap email accounts can go through the Gmail application. However, the only disadvantages some of them like Yahoo won't be a push for notifications I think Gmail will fetch new emails off the server every 15 minutes as the quickest interview.

OP, that is not unusual. I have a total of 4 email apps. Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook and stock samsung email. You can download any of those (yahoo, outlook, there is a lot more) so you can separate your work/personal email.

Though most email apps now can handle different email providers. My work email (imap) and comcast goes through outlook fine. It can handle all emails i think but like you, i like to separate them and make it native as much as possible (gmail to gmail app, yahoo to yahoo app etc).

correct, for example, I have my personal Gmail and my work exchange email through the Gmail application. Just makes everything more efficient and simple.

Download one of the gazzilion email apps for your work account and try them??

I use Gmail for a few personal accounts and outlook for my work ones. This with a separate SIM for work in my phone keeps it all segregated.

All works well.

For the other email app use Microsoft Outlook which is great or one of the many other email application available in the play store. Personally never liked the built in email app in other OEM phones. I generally use Gmail app for my Gmail accounts and Outlook for work, and other email accounts. Based on your preference you can also use either one of them for all your accounts.

Thanks for the fast responses.

I know there are gazillions of mail apps. There are also similar numbers of articles rating them. I'm hoping to cut through the fog with a recommendation of widely-accepted and used one. Sounds like Outlook might be the best way to go?

Well, the problem with Outlook application is it doesn't interface very well with your stock Google calendar application that's on your phone. Other than that, go for it.

Another option is to keep Gmail for both accounts (since it seems both are native gmail) but setup separate widgets on your home screen to take you directly to each account. The "Gmail Label" widget asks for which gmail account you want it to open when you create it and lets you name the icon (so "Home" and "Work"). The basic Gmail Icon that you are probably using right now, always takes you to whichever account you last had open (which could be confusing). If you make a widget icon for each account, then use those to open each as you need them, it will always show you the account you expect.

The issue with some people is giving your credentials to a third party (insert random email app here).

I mean I understand that confusion and frustration for some people but for me, I like to have everything in one Google application if possible. Besides I rely much more on Google calendar to organize my life than outlook calendar. So, if my exchange email can sync through my Google calendar, wonderful.

Because we deal with confidential information, we're forced to use the Boxer app for work emails. it's actually a suite of email/calendar/contacts. It works OK. Work tries to push everyone to iPhone, but many of us just want our Android. So Boxer it is. There's one feature that annoys me to no end. When I reply to an eamil, I can of course enter any text I chose, but I can't edit any information below that like parts of the email string below that. Awful.
