I have changed my carrier from iD mobile piggy backing off Three mobile to GiffGaff piggy backing off 02 on my Moto G5 Oreo 8.1.

Three mobile had 3G and 4G, 02 has 2G, 3G and 4G. This is my first experience with a carrier using 2G as well as 3 and 4G.

My question is:- Using the GiffGaff / 02 SIM I sometimes get a small white cross sitting on top of the mobile signal strength icon. Does this cross indicate that the signal strength will only allow voice and texts but not internet?

I believe that the cross does indeed mean that you have 2G, but no Internet. I don’t think that the carrier is relevant - although perhaps you weren’t implying that.

I use Three, and have seen it a few times, briefly. I guess that must mean that I had no connection.

No, I wasn't implying that it was just the 02 carrier but as Three mobile didn't use 2G I thought it might be dropping to 2G when the signal was low as that was the only difference between the two.

Cheers guys, I think you have confirmed my suspicions. The reason I moved from Three mobile to 02 was that without 2G on Three, when the signal was low the ability to make a voice call wasn't there. Also the higher frequency that Three use restrict it's ability to penetrate walls.

On the subject of O2, I was pleased to learn recently that, like Three, they offer a PAYG option of 3p/call, 2p/text, 1p/mb, and that, also like Three, unused credit does not expire after 30d. They call it Classic PAYG.

An on the side question.

I use Google maps for navigation, I have downloaded Google maps for offline use.
Will I still get live traffic updates when navigating in the car if the phone signal drops to 2G?
