Greetings,

I have an off-the-shelf Sprint EVO. FroYo was already on it when I opened the box.

I'm looking for the answers to these questions myself but I thought I'd ask anyway for expediency's sake.

I thought FroYo had multiple Exchange Server support similar to Apple's IOS4. I also thought that Android had a panoramic camera option. Neither of these are on my Evo. Did Sprint or HTC disable/remove/not purchase a license for this functionality?

Will rooting the phone restore these features (guessing "no")? If I install CynogenMod will I get these features?

I've bought a few apps through the Market. Can I re-download and re-install after rooting? After installing CynogenMod?

What prevents a rooted or ROMed phone from taking a Sprint update and overwriting the active ROM or bricking itself?

Must I restore the factory ROM before turning the phone in for warranty exchange?

Thanks --

Sorry, you cant, rooting may or may not let you do these. though panoramic camera can be emulated with apps.

Yes! of course you can!

Nothing, so don't update. It will always prompt you to install the update, just say no.

Must I restore the factory ROM before turning the phone in for warranty exchange?

might be a good idea, would be pretty easy to see you rooted...

Thanks, liquidjesus. I appreciate your help.

PedroTheGoat, thanks, funny that lj beat you to the "submit" button. Been there myself, elsewhere. :) I would've liked to read your advice.

Three very quick followups if you don't mind ...

Is there some way to bury the update prompt so it doesn't pop up at an unfortunate time, like when my kid is playing ThrottleCopter?

Let's say that Junior updates the phone because he's real helpful that way, and it bricks. Am I SOL?

If I have to exchange the phone because of a completely dead display, would you think the rooting/romming could become an issue? I'm guessing no but maybe you know of someone who's run into this situation ... ?

Thanks again folks.

On a custom rom the update shouldn't come thru, but just in case it does there's away to change the name of the file the ota would check to verify before it installs. Then the worse that could happen would be it downloads but can't install becasue it won't past a test.
If the screen goes out but it turns on then just download the RUU and run it before returning the phone and then there would be no trace of root/rom.

Ill get the commands to edit the name of the file and post them here in just a few.

You can turn off system software updates.

Most likely if you did take an OTA update it wouldn't brick you would just lose root.

Go with what Beezy said. Forgot about that lol.

Open command propmt and enter the following commands.
Code:
adb remount

Code:
adb shell

Code:
mv /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip.bak

After doing this, the OTA updates WILL still download, BUT they will not pass signature checks to flash because of the code you just entered.

You can copy&paste those codes.

(Thanks regaw)

Thanks to everyone for the tips. I've rooted with U3 and U4Ever, installed RA Recovery and CM6 with a nightly every couple of days.

I now have AWESOME multiple Exchange server support with calendars and the combined inbox.

Don't have the panoramic camrera, I guess those bits aren't in the CM6 implementation of the Android camera app. I'll get over it.

Biggest thing for me is how cool my phone has become without Sense ;)

Another noob here with a few questions.

1 - Rooted for the 1st time over the weekend and installed ROM Manager. Flashed the BakedSnack ROM and like it so far. I've read on the developer's site that when installing this ROM to ensure that the latest Wimax update and radio from HTC is installed. Is this already included in the ROM Manager process that I used or do I need to install those things manually on my own?

2 - Is ROM Manager a good way to find/try out custom ROMs? Is there anything I need to know before trying different ones out via this app?

Thanks in advance.

1) Radios and such are not included in the ROM. They are easily obtainable in lots of places including the bakedsnack thread.

2) There are WAY more dev's that don't use ROM Manager than dev's that use it. That means the answer to your question is no. I suggest reading the forums and such. You'll find out what the good ones are quick. This also let's you read the thread before flashing so you can be fully aware of any quirks or nuances of the ROM.

So even though I don't notice anything wrong with the way my phone is running it's best that I flash the latest radio and Wimax?

And thanks for your help.

It doesnt hurt to flash them but do this first ...

Menu > Settings > About phone > Software information - if your baseband is 2.15.00.07.28 you already have the newest radio.

Ah I do. How do I know if I have the latest Wimax? Or is that what the radio is?

And for future reference, is there a sticky that I'm missing on how to flash things like radios, kernels, etc?

To check which version of wimax you have i think you can just download android terminal emulator from the market and type the following

su [enter]
wimax_mtd [enter]

you'll be looking for the following
"check firmware version<4.6.2.2v26023_>...............4.6.2.2v2602 3_"

If that doesnt work then use ADB, adb shell [enter] wimax_mtd [enter]

The terminal emulator worked and I do in fact have the latest wimax. Thanks!

More noob questions...

I see lots of experienced "rooters" discussing performance metrics such as linpack, quadrant, etc. What's the best way to see how my phone is performing and is there a 1-stop place to get definitions on what all that stuff means?

I swear guys....I am learning with each answered question. :o

Download quadrant from the market. It's an all around great way to see how your phone's performing overall.
