I'm new to Android coming from a Pre and I'm kinda embarrassed that I can't figure some things out.
I've searched the forums and I get that froyo is Android 2.2. Is that available for the evo or is it even out?
If I root my Evo will I be able to update to froyo?
Do I have froyo and don't even know it?
I got my phone over the weekend and didn't have a lot of time with all the festivities. What are the first things I should get/download/run in order to get the most out of my Evo? On PreCentral there was a getting started thread with everything from rooting to the best apps, but I didn't see one on here that explains the pulses and minutes for rooting. Thanks for all your help and I hope that I'm not just annoying the crap out of everyone.

Welcome to the LIGHT SIDE
What exactly you looking for, I also from the Pre. If you want you can me PM or expalin here, I be more then happy to help anyway I can.

Froyo is not out and I don't think it's out for root yet either, but I imagine it won't be long. There is a thread about the pluses and minuses of rooting out there somewhere.

I like the device 10x better than the pre. But I need to get used to Android and maybe need a beginners class on it. I used to think of myself as being tech savvy, but after getting the evo, I was mystified by it. I will look for that rooting thread before I start blowing up the main page with my q's.

there actually is a froyo rom if you root. however, it does not have htc's sense on it. im holding out myself untill there is a 2.2 with sense ui on top of it. also since i did the ota i cannot root at the moment but im sure theyll figure it out soon.

The answers to all your questions can be found in these forums. Read, and you shall learn. Read the forums, read the archive of articles, and use search. Yeah, you might find someone to answer these specific questions, but if you do what I've suggested you'll learn far more.

I have learned a lot in the days and days that I've spent on here. But there are so many roms and versions of roms different terms for android os's that even coming across something that may be of help, is really no help without knowledge of the particular jargon. Like rooting for example. I've read in the hacks section and this one, but not once did i read a post that said "go ahead and root your phone. You'll have no problems updating to Froyo when it comes out." or "Don't root your phone if you want Froyo when it comes out." Or "this is why the ROM of 2.1 is better than this ROM 2.1" etc etc etc... As I've said before, this ain't my first time learning a new OS, it just seems way more complicated because of the degree that things have been hacked/customized. I see all these posts talking about people running 2.2 but I thought it wasn't out yet. But they don't say what phone or company so I'm thinking maybe its not for mine or maybe it is. It's just a bit confusing. I wouldn't flame any board or thread with something that could be searched and found. But I searched and searched and read and read.

There's article in the archives (NOT the forums) entitled something like "should you root your phone." I think that will get you started. Also search the archives and forums for "unrevoked."

As for comparing ROMs, that's a question for the rooting forum, I think. I've come to the conclusion that none of the widely available ROMs are well enough tested for anyone who wants to simply use their phone, as opposed to experiment with it.

Honestly, if you are brand new to Android, my suggestion would be to not even consider rooting your Evo now.

I say this because I think it's important for all new users to experience the OS as it was meant to be from the factory, at least for a while. Rooting is great if you really want to change things up, but Android is already so customizable that it's not needed for most users.

Also, rooting is an advanced process not without risk. If you want Froyo, it's coming without the need to root, hopefully fairly soon, direct from Sprint/HTC.

I consider myself very tech savvy, but I have decided not to root at this point and just wait for the official Froyo release. I have my old Hero to play the root games with :-)

Just my $0.02.

Sent from my HTC Evo 'cause it WAS the droid I was looking for.

Follow anything you can posted by gbhil. He is very helpful and knowledgeable and will also respond in threads. If you want root and to stay stock, you can -- rooting itself does not mean custom roms. The first Rom I would recommend when you're ready is the RvU Rom in the hacks section. It is pretty much stock, but with a few things added in the Rom you would end up installing anyways and the ability to delete certain HTC and Sprint bloatware.

DO NOT INSTALL THE LATESET OTA UPDATE FROM SPRINT. That hasn't been rooted yet. don't install a single thing related to it, either. no radios, no nothing.

this is for the Hero, but it's a good read and only to read. don't use the files it just helps understand some things because there are things covered here not covered in the Evo thread. i came from the Hero and have used both tutorials. they work well together because they are so similar.

things to watch out for: XDA forum is for the more experienced. those threads get so long so fast that help is harder to get. also, you got more folks just throwing stuff out there and you can get burned (i did).

ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP. you are gonna learn about those. save a solid backup to your computer. folks having been killing their SD cards and if you don't save backups to your PC then you are gonna be doing a lot all over again if something breaks. on that note -- make sure you have another SD card about just in case your first one craps out.

PAY FOR TITIANIUM BACKUP!!!! it's worth the money when you go to use it to restore backups you made with it or else you will have to load each app one at a time. (NANDROID backups are basically images that you can restore as stand alone backups. Titanium backups are for your apps and user settings within a working ROM.)

Root explorer. get it. can be used with root and without.

when you start flashing ROMs boot loops are common and you will read about them. they happen when you don't wipe your cache (the dalvik cache) and are cured with a wipe and re-flash. if it happens -- battery pull and boot in your boot loader.

there is more, but i gotta go visit my parents. just start hanging around the Hacks section of the forum linked at the top of the regular forum.
