I'm considering my first smartphone. Is there an advantage to buying say the Incredible over one of the less pricy Android phones (outside of the fact that it has a bigger screen and it's the latest) when it seems like all Android phones get the updates and the functions, I assume, will be the same on all Android phones?

I think so, yes, especially if you sign a two year contract, and become eligible for an update every 20 months. You will pay a lot more over the contract period for service than you will at the time of purchase of the handset. What you will get is the fastest phone that you can buy on that day, one that will be far more likely to be supported with OS upgrades and the like, for a small amount of cash outlay compared with what you will spend for service. Your phone will be plagued less with issues of lag, etc.

If you can't afford to spend what they will charge, or you do not want a handset that is that size, or you feel that you need a hardware keyboard, then obviously that must factor into your decision.

What updates are you talking about? Android 2.0 has been out since last fall and most older Android phones have still not received that upgrade. If you want a phone with the latest Android features, then buy one with Android 2.0 (or 2.1) pre-installed. With the Motorola Droid selling for $20 (with Verizon contract) these days, there is really no excuse to buy a lesser Android phone.

also, the incredible/moto droid are going to be much faster than other android phones currently on verizon's network, so keep that in mind as well.
