New to Androis, dumb ?

I use a iphone and windows 7 on computers.

Just got the Nexus 7 32MB yesterday. No nothing about the chrome browser or Android. Can I use Internet Explorer 8 on this tablet. I know you think I'm crazy, but that is what I know.

Also, must all apps be downloaded from that Google store.

Thanks for any help or advice given

I downloaded and use Firefox browser. It works OK, but its not as user friendly as the non-android Firefox that I'm used to. Just not wild about IE8 or Chrome - sorry Google :-!

Do the websites really need Internet Exploder or do they just think they need Internet Exploder?
IE can you get around it if you change the user agent?

Some of us would like to use IE on the Nexus because we have to. In my line of work I interact with a number of websites to file reports and some of those websites are IE only websites. Kinda makes the Nexus useless as a work platform for me and anyone else that interacts with these kinds of websites. So right now my Nexus sits on a shelf on my desk and hasn't been turned on in over a month. That's how useful it is to me.

This 'restriction' (to force use of IE) is one of the reasons I don't like using IE! Microsoft (and even Goggle) is way too monopolistic attituded. After posting here my thinking is that given time, and a challenge ;), it won't be long before someone apps a patch that will let you use IE to your hearts content. Heck there probably is one now just no one here seems interested :D

I used Firefox, I like it, no major gripes. Plus I can use flash with it. I do like chrome.. But it doesn't work for me on www.noaa.gov when you try to select your local area on the map, and being a storm spotter with the NWS its important to have that information.

This isn't like getting a phone app to work on a tablet - IE has never been written for Android. It's like if there were a book only available in Chinese. You can't just put a cover on it with an English title, and throw a few English words in here & there, and have an English version of the book. The entire thing has to be rewritten for the different language, and no automated translator is going to do a proper job of it, either. It's a lot of tedious work, and on top of that could cause some legal troubles with Microsoft.

The best case scenario is that someone mods another browser to trick websites into thinking it is IE.

I believe IE isn't open source either, so Microsoft would have to create it. And I doubt they're gonna do that

Well thanks for all the imput. I'm 77 and the local guy that fixes Windows computers. [free service for friends] I'm use to IE 8 and hard to teach old dog new tricks. I guess what I'm worried about is tranfering info, pictures, ECT to a new broswer that I don't know.

Also, I use screen savers on my phones. Should I use one on the tablet? If so, what is the best one to use.

Thanks again for the help

IE is a web browser, it's not your PC so it shouldn't be storing your pictures or files. If you want to access those pictures, files, etc, you need to transfer it to your N7 or have it hosted online, normally what is known as "cloud" these days. You can get free space from Google drive or dropbox to name a couple.

You can however export your bookmarks from IE on the PC to chrome web browser on the PC and have it sync to your N7.

Not to worry, I'm collecting Social Security myself and even though I've been around computers since the late 1960s I felt like a cave man with a TV remote when I first got my N7!! I really have learned a bunch from those Basics videos on You Tube plus all the GREAT replies I've gotten from the others here too. I've long worked under that assumption that a 'dumb question' is one that you already know the answer to ;) - ha ha! So get bold and post your questions so you can get them answered. We 'old dogs' are SMART too :D

Doing a lot of reading and watching videos. The first app I downloaded was Ultimate Rotation Control. Now I can turn it any way I want. Not much, but a start.
