Hi everyone.
I am trying to work my way round the nexus 7 and what it can and cant do. We have a laptop as well and want to do away with this and just use the nexus 7 but dont want to lose all the functions we have with the laptop.
Can you help me with the following things please?
We want to be able to transfer files to and from nexus 7. I think the best way to transfer to is to drag and drop via the pc. Not sure about the other way round as I have seen lots about rooting but not sure if it is the best/safest thing to do????
We also want to print from the N7 and have installed cloudprint but so far not been able to physically print although the N7 screen says it is queued and ready to go.
We listen to music on Youtube and local radio a lot on the pc and although we can do this on the N7, we use external speakers and dont seem to be able to use them on the N7 - any tips/ can we use our existing speakers for the Nexus?
Finally, I have seen things on tethering which I think means I can use the Nexus and connect my pc through it - is this right and is it the answer to all my questions!!!
Sorry for so many questions but not too good on all this stuff so any help/advice would be appreciated.
Thank you!

Tethering refers to setting up a smartphone, or other data enabled device, to act as a mobile WiFi hot spot. Your nexus 7 would then connect to your mobile internet provider via WiFi. IMHO a 7 inch android device is not an adequate replacement for a laptop computer.

1) We want to be able to transfer files to and from nexus 7. I think the best way to transfer to is to drag and drop via the pc. Not sure about the other way round as I have seen lots about rooting but not sure if it is the best/safest thing to do????

1a) What type of files do you need to transfer? Are all of your files you need to transfer going from the N7 to a PC?

2) We also want to print from the N7 and have installed cloudprint but so far not been able to physically print although the N7 screen says it is queued and ready to go.

2a) Depending on your printer, you may be able to find the appropriate app that will allow you to print via your network wi-fi. I have an Epson wi-fi printer and the app allows me to print from ny N7 flawlessly.

3) We listen to music on Youtube and local radio a lot on the pc and although we can do this on the N7, we use external speakers and dont seem to be able to use them on the N7 - any tips/

3a) Are the speakers wired? Most "wired" speakers should work on the N7. I suggest possibly purchasing bluetooth speakers. This way, you don't have to worry about cords.

4) Finally, I have seen things on tethering which I think means I can use the Nexus and connect my pc through it - is this right and is it the answer to all my questions!!!

4a) Tethering can be both corded or wireless connections between two devices. Let me know what you need transferred and I can suggest some solutions.

Hi and thanks for your reply. The files to transfer back and forth would moist likely be word docs. I have seen a cloud print app that might work for the printing and will give that a try. The speakers we have connect via a USB cable to the laptop. I have tried connecting them to the nexus via an OTG lead but nothing happens.
Thanks again for any ideas.

I use Dropbox to transfer files. As far as cloud print, have you enabled that on the computer that the printer is connected to? If I recall right when I set it up, I had to enable it on the PC, too. I assume your printer is wifi also? I have cloud printing enabled and can print from my work computer or N7. My printer is an HP and also has a cloud print app, so like said above, perhaps yours does, too.

No idea on the speakers or tethering, although I do have speakers that work. Maybe it's OTG that's causing that to fail.

Good luck!

I transfer files between my GNex and my Nexus 7 using either Bluetooth or Google Drive. Mostly photos.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus

No worries! I agree with Hoosiermama2799 in regards to file transfer. Dropbox is probably the best solution for uploading files and transferring them to your N7. Also, if the docs aren't too large, you could simply email them from the PC to your device if you have email set up on the N7.

In regards to the speakers, sounds like the N7 may not support them. You may have to purchase ones with an audio jack. This will ensure you will be able to use them on the N7 and laptop.

Hope this helps!

I've moved files back and forth between my Nexus 7 and my Windows 7 computer simply by using the USB cable that came with the Nexus. I plug it into the Nexus and into a USB port on my computer. If I click on My Computer (now called Computer), it shows me the Nexus files. I can move them easily to the PC and vice versa. No need for DropBox. I also have an app called webDAV Pro that lets me do all this via WiFi, but you don't need it just to move files.
