New to ROMS and Kernels

Hey guys!!

Ok, so I'm a noob to rooting, ROMS, etc

I have rooted my sprint epic 4g touch running JellyBean 4.1.2 and have absolutely no clue what a ROM is or what a kernel is. Everything I come across keeps mentioning Ice Cream Sandwich, no mention of JellyBean. And, I can't find simple step by step instructions on what to do first, second, etc. Can anyone please help!?
