I'm brand new to rooting but have a basic idea of how things work...I'm not the biggest sense fan but hate the lag of an launcher on top of sense...is a rom like cyanogenmod 6 a large improvement or will it be like adw over sense (I'm a fan of ADW but can't stand the un-smoothness)...any suggestions?

You could try CM6 with Launcher Pro. There is also a thread over at XDA to help get rid of ADW's lag.

Cm6 could be an option because I'm not in A 4g area, hdmi is still a novelty which I don't use, and fm hasn't been touched by me yet. My real debate is between cm6 or a sense Rom like fresh or dc...I've seen cm6 in action but have no idea what the sense rons are like?

I'm a huge advocate for Baked Snack 1.7 for Sense ROM's, very stable, great battery life and performance is great. Check out the link to my sig to see for yourself..

I was going to start a thread on this subject... I'm so confused with all the ROMS out there! Right now I'm still using stock 2.1 with unrevoked3 root, mainly to get WiFi tethering. I've never upgraded to 2.2. Of course, the best ROM for each user depends on their priorities, here are mine, in decreasing order:

1. Free WiFi tethering (MUST HAVE!) Don't tell me why I really don't need it; I'm deaf on that topic
2. 4G (also a must have, though I couldn't care less about HDMI or FM radio)
3. Better battery life
4. Smoother graphics (minor point, I'm OK with the current graphics but it could be better)
5. Faster operation (again, minor point, the lag doesn't bother me much)

Any suggestions? I'm OK with sense, I don't feel compelled to add a launcher on top of it but I could be converted.

I will try these out soon because I dont have root now...got a new evo because of a scarring broken screen accident.....and the 2.2 root process looks overwhelming..I will probably wait for the new revoked update...

Sounds to me like almost any sense 2.2 ROM built off Sprint's/HTC's base, with an OC'ed kernel, and FPS cap removed will work just fine for you. It takes care of all of your points above.

b0ricua will tell you (and I agree with him) Baked Snack 1.7 is a pretty darn good Sense ROM, 4G works, HDMI works, and FM radio works..... Much better battery life than stock, Graphics and FPS cap removed and I was amazed how much faster than the stock ROM this one was... I think the base Kernal packaged with this ROM gives you 1.2+ ghz over clock....
b0ricua uses the Smooth-Sense theme... I am using the Evolution theme myself...

How does baked snack compare to fresh Rom?

Have not tried Fresh.. Honestly Baked Snack is the only one I have tried as of yet.. I have only been rooted for a week.... After I installed Baked Snack and then added back all my App's, installed the Theme and boot animation I just decided to let it run for now.... I have it backed up now so I can go back to it as is but it works so well and themed it looks the way I want it (Again at least for now. I am sure I will see another Theme or hear about another ROM and want to check it out)

Yea I have heard amazing things from both...I got to see the pros and cons about both

I can't compare.. So far not a single problem with Baked Snack after a week. Every thing still works.... It's almost like a stock ROM, Minus the Sprint bloatware, but highly customizable.... I mean I see that CM6 does not offer 4G or HDMI (I might be mistaken)

Every thing feels snappier.... 3G and 4G speeds are actually higher than before I rooted.. Not fully sure if this is because of the ROM or Sprint has made adjustments to the WiMax network in my area (We are not officially 4G according to Sprint but for months I have had a 4G signal in and around Nashville)

Now battery life is with out a doubt better... Much better than vs stock...

If I get tired of this or see some thing I want to try out I might go back and try some thing different.... but why mess with a good thing right?

Ok I'm totally confused now... I'd like to update from unrevoked Android system 2.1 to some form of rooted system 2.2. I would like to have the current version of 2.2 for the (supposedly) better battery life and (universally acclaimed) smoother video. Again I only want root access so I can use WiFi tethering, I don't plan on using a custom ROM at the moment. Can I just use this ROM, which is supposed to be a stock rooted ROM? Or does the fact that I'm unrevoked nix that option?

Also if I can use that ROM, I presume I wouldn't need to use unrevoked 3.2.1 since I'm already rooted? Is there any advantage to installing unrevoked 3.2.1 (or unrevoked forever) anyway?

Or can I just do an OTA update from unrevoked 2.1 -> 2.2 (which I presume will break root access), then use unrevoked 3.2.1 to regain root access?

Sorry for the dumb questions!

Ok since no one answered the question, I answered it myself...
  1. Run unrevoked 3.2.1
  2. Download this rooted stock rom
  3. Rename the downloaded file update.zip and copy it to the root directory of your SD card
  4. Run update (power down, power up while holding volume down button pressed, then follow menus to select and install update.zip ROM)
  5. Reboot
  6. Rerun unrevoked 3.2.1
  7. Install latest version of wireless tether app
  8. Duh, enjoy your phone!
I'm really not sure if all these steps were needed, but it worked. Now good to go with rooted latest stock 2.2 system. I didn't even need to do a Titanium backup and restore of my data, everything seems to have survived the process.
