I want to be able to delete certain stuff from my Galaxy S4 so I decided to root it. I have a couple questions though. Do I have to factory restart my phone before rooting? How safe is rooting? I'm looking at a video on youtube to see how it's done but I don't want to damage my phone in any way either.

Welcome to the forums.
Rooting does void your warranty. That being said, you will typically not get anymore OTA updates. Rooting adds a modified status, and block the OTA.
Most rooting procedures have installing a custom recovery on your device. My only suggestion is to make a Nandroid backup (a copy of your OS) before doing anything major.
