Soooo.... We have had our Gear S watches for a while now. Samsung is mysteriously quiet about smart watch future. Meanwhile my Gear S is still not able to remind me to do a simple task tomorrow.

Now to my questions:
Is the life of the Gear S coming to an end?
Is it all it will ever be?
Has Samsung moved on?
Will my watch ever be able to remind me to do things?
Will the whole S Voice deal ever really work?

What do you think? And please try to be realistic and not to affectionate....

Written on my Note 4, with my Gear S on my wrist.

Gear S2 should be out any time now. Everything you wished for will only be on the new model. That's how it works.

Based on how Samsung releases its smartphones and smart watches in the past decade (I owned many of them). Samsung is a hardware company. They sell new hardware for a living. Their software always lags behind.

I do think they need to make some improvements to tizen. Right now I feel it's kind of basic functions in comparison with android but I know android had been around for a while. Don't get me wrong, I love my gear s!

Have you tried My Notes in Gear? I use it to remind me of upcoming events. Just give it a title,a reminder time, etc and it does the rest, either in conjunction with the watch or standalone.
Here's a screen shot of a blank note/list both on the phone and on the watch. Like I wrote, they can be used in conjunction with each other or totally separate

you say everything right ,, nothing really new,,,that I really began to regret my purchase,,,the watch became very boring after only 1 week of using.

I know about it, but is not the answer. I want a watch that tells me today's weather, the height of the statue of liberty, Einstein's birthday AND take simple reminders all from pressing the button twice and talking.

I want to be able to tell my watch to remind me to file a report when I get to work. And most times I need to have a reminder set up I do not have, or wish to take, the time opening apps and such.

You're asking a bit much from a first generation device if you want all that as standalone at this point.
I agree, I'd like mine to make my Note4 obsolete, including being able to have a watch version s pen. For now I'll use Opera Mini to find the answers I seek with a Google search.

How am I asking to much? S Voice on my phone can take reminders. S Voice on my watch understands the command, it takes perfect dictation if what I ask it to do. The evidence is in the text it presents on screen aften i tell it to remind me. How hard can it be to send that string of text to the phone, have the phone set the reminder, and reply back to my watch the answer?

And besides, if I am not mistaken, the Gear 2 has this feature. Why not Gear S?

It's what Samsung does. They'll add this or that to 1 device while leaving it off of another. Next generation of S will have more capabilities.
I'm not one who wanted it but no camera or r blaster on the S made no sense to me either. If you're going to be making the highest end version of a device , to me at least, you'd think the bells and whistles of the lower end ones would also be present. A Cadillac should have the same great a.c. as a Chevy, not leave it off completely and the only way to cool off is roll down the windows.
Now that Apple has officially jumped into the fray, Samsung probably won't flounder around in the next offerings. They'll have someone to plagiarize that they're used to and will not seem so lost. Remember Samsung was out front on the Gear and had nobody to mimic. Now that AW is becoming more of a hit and Apple is also involved, Samsung will do a better job of "innovating" their Tizen capabilities.

I really hope Samsung is not going to copy the iCrap watch, cuz then we'll end up with a Casio Calculator watch.........

And AW has no future unless they reinvent it. That system is so basic and so cumbersome it is doomed by it's stupidity. That is my five cents on AW...

Tizen. ...Tizen.. ....tizen.... WHY SAMSUNG? WHY? WHY REINVENT THE WHEEL? WHY USE STICKS INSTEAD OF A LIGHTER TO START YOUR FIRE?

The system is overly complex to the point it is impossible to use full out. It is a nightmare to develop apps, just because it is so limited within its own structure. I understand very well the lack of high end apps, but still it is no excuse.

That said, with what is out on the marked now I will not change my S for anything else. I just wished they could release the brake and get this thing to the moon where we all know it is capable to go.

I agree totally. I loathe Google Now which is all AW really is .
As I've written elsewhere,I started with a Fit, though much more basic than the S, for its abilities above AW that fit my needs. I wanted a Neo (a Fit with built in music player imo) but everyone was out so AT&T sold me the S for the same price as the Neo then took $30 off ,since I work for Toys R Us, as a discount. The S is much more than what I was seeking and I'm ok with its limitations for now as it is still better than the competition.
As far as them following Apple I kinda hope the move the power button to the side like a regular watch has and Apple made use of. I really like the button on the side of my Fit, my only gripe with my S.

Agreed

I ordered a Pebble Steel back when. But when they totally failed to deliver I ended up with a Sony Smartwatch 2. Loved it to death, but when my Z1 Compact capped out I got an S4 which in time lead to a Gear 2 Neo. Now this watch was awesome with its IR blaster and interchangeable straps. Then came a sale on the LG G Watch R. I off course wanted to try AW. And boy it suck in my mind. The only good thing was Google Voice. So when I got enough money I went back to Samsung with my Gear S. The only thing missing is the IR blaster.

As you can see I speak with some experience in the world of Smart watches. And I to like the button on the side, but not as big as the one on LG G Watch R. Sometimes it would activate just by bending my wrist to far. I would like a small, extruding button. Maybe even more than one for fast control when it is raining etc. I want the IR blaster back, although I just laughed at it before I got a watch that had one. Wireless battery charging is a given. The cradle is crap. I am on my second cradle in two-three months. And I even follow the manual when it comes to putting it on....
I also think it should be IP68, so I can wear it EVERYWHERE. Maybe I want to put a Gear S inside a Pebble Steel body....

So there's a big difference between ip67 and ip68?
I saw a review on the S where the owner also upgraded from a Fit that he stated he kept on all day at a water park, often going in water 10' deep. It is ip67 also.

In short IP 67 is water resistant while IP 68 is water proof

IP 6x is telling that the device is dustproof. No dust can under any circumstances get in.
IP x7 means it can stand bering submerged in 1 meter of clean water for 30min sitting still. That's it. No shower, no swimming.
IP x8 means immersion deeper than 1m. Here it is up to the manufacturer to spesify the depth. So if Samsung says it is rated to Titanic (4000m+) that means they guarantee it to this depth without any HARMFUL ingress of water. Meaning water may penetrate some parts, but not in a harmful way to the operation of the device. An IP 68 device is a swim, shower and such device as long as you do not pass the manufacturer depth.

That being said, search YouTube for Gear S + shower and you find it is one tough device. It will most likely have no problems showering, swimming etc. But the manufacturer can't GUARANTEE it will survive. Hence IP67 and written warnings against swimming and showering.

Hope this is an answer to your question.
