Hello all I'm new to t-m and androids. Love the phone so far, only used maps and messaging. I have a gmail address is this how i'm going to sync up my stuff?

I'm coming over from a win 6.5.3 and using outlook.
saw the thread about .csv and sent all that stuff to gmail.

Your gmail account is going to link your contacts , apps and calendar.

As for rooting, I say go for it. Eventually some nice roms will be available.

SO TO ROOT OR NOT TOO ROOT: I've been a blackberry fan for years, and I made the change to Android and picked up the Vibrant. I have read a lot of posts about rooting,... Still seems like there is potential problems that can come from doing it... (I assume by doing it incorrectly) Can anyone who HAS DONE it comment on this subject,...? And maybe explain or post a link that I can read about ROM's?
Also... Will rooting cause the screen response to not bog down at times?

I do love the idea of deleting programs that I will never use: i.e. the Mini Diary- what a waste... lol

I have had a Vibrant for a few days, and I rooted it the day I got it.

Rooting the Vibrant is ridiculously simple. You go here, and follow the instructions, which consist of the following:
Download the .zip file
Rename it
Copy it to your phone's internal memory
Reboot your phone into recovery mode
Select an option, and the phone will reboot, and be rooted! Its an incredibly simple procedure that is very difficult to mess up.

Dumb question maybe but what are the advantages to rooting? Can you put 2.2 on when rooted? Thanks

sure... if you port it over... or wait for someone to port it over to work. It won't have touchwiz, but it will be 2.2. You should be able to download flash as well (assuming you also have valid keys for protected apps in the market).

Cyanogen Mode 6 (a 2.2 open source build) is being ported over to the Vibrant. We will probably see this one before Samsung releases a 2.2 TouchWiz version.

These are some great questions as I am a new Vibrant owner as well. I saw someone asked the VERY question I wanted to ask, but I have yet to read a concise (and New Droid Layman's) explanation though. From what I gather, it just seems that you are unlocking the phone to use on multiple carriers.. In addition, I'm not sure what part ROM's play in the improvement of the Vibrant. I mean, how could this thing get any better. The only ROMs I am familiar with are the ones that you download to play on the SNES and NES emulators (Donkey Kong Country is the business btw). So, in sum:

1) What are the benefits to rooting?
2) How do ROM's make the Vibrant better?
3) Recommend a couple GREAT apps that will reboot the (non-rooted) phone.

Thanks SO much! ;D
