Just ordered a new walnut moto x. The back must be laminated (poorly) to plastic or some other substrate as the wood has 3 bubles in it that are quite noticeable to feel. I earlier returned a bamboo one that had peculiar coloring (it looked "dirty" out of the box). They seem to have big quality control issues with these wood backs. If they don't get the exchanged one right I am done with Motorola nee Lenovo.Moto X.jpg

You are absolutely right that they haven't perfected the process of manufacturing the wood backs. Sending it back actually helps them with their QA. These wood backs are fantastic when they are done right, but many have dimples and splits and now bubbles in them, which is unacceptable.

Mine doesn't have any of these issues. I hope your next one doesn't, either.

Does yours also have a depression where the Motorola logo is? I can't tell from your picture.

I can see it in the picture. The depression where the Moto logo is is less pronounced on the wood backs.

If you click his picture it will open in a new tab and you can magnify it.

That's right -- the indentation is there but lessed pronounced.

Thanks, I'm in the app, can't make the image bigger. Mine has that indentation and I wasn't sure if it was normal.

BTW, the "walnut" does not feel particularly wood-like -- it is thin and vinyl-like. And it looks like the wood grain is printed on with an inkjet printer. The bamboo look and feel is more like wood (even though bamboo is a grass) and is nicer, assuming you can get one where the appearance is decent. I may bail on the wood backs altogether.

I think there is an epoxy on top of the wood and then on top of that is the nano coating. The nano coating is what gives it that fake look I think. Once some of the grease from your fingers starts to get on the back, it looks much better, more real.

I really like mine, but I know what you mean about the fake look it has out of the box. The more I handled mine, the better it looked.

Thanks. I may reconsider.

You should definitely try to get one you are happy with. I also got the walnut back but with silver accents and I think it looks great. The first one I received looked like the "wood" underneath the laminate was split/torn. The 2nd one I received has no issues. There are pics of other people having issues in Cozume's thread:

This thread has more pics, too:

I will be posting pics of another walnut one, soon, too. No issues with quality, but I prefer the pattern on mine to the new one I will post pics of soon.

Hello Alka,

first sorry for the fault and it is deeply regretted by us.
please contact the seller regarding this issue. And if you don't want to loose your back cover
you can correct it at your home by rubbing it with sand paper precisely on the bubble.Try it!!

Thanks

I would not listen to this post contact moto direct. I'd say this is just some troll
