Let me start of by saying hey.

Second, I am very reluctant to root my EVO as to how I have read that you need to use a ROM that someone has made themselves to run the phone after rooting.

Are these ROM's safe to run and how do you know which one to run? I just want to get some of these widgets off this phone and see how much better it run on another OS.

I'm no computer wiz at all when it come to this android system so I may come off stupid at time so bare with me I catch on quick.

Thanks for any info.

is rooting really necessary? IMO just enjoy the phone and resist the urge to tinker before you hurt yourself.

good luck.

You do not need a special rom. You can root and leave it stock.

Thats what I'm wondering. Is rooting just here because people cant leave the phone alone and just need to hack into it or is there some real benefits to it?

Are you able to get more apps for free as you are when you jailbreak an iphone?

If you want to try other ROMs you can still go back to a rooted stock ROM.

Theres always going to be "shady" sites im sure, but personally im not even interested. Devs put in alot of work and the best thing I found with the Android Market opposed to the App Store, is the ability to refund!! This was a very welcome feature for me coming from an iPhone and paying for alot of crap apps.

As far as rooting, I was just as nervous as im sure you are, even tho I was comfortable with jailbreaking my iPhone and iPad. I say give it a shot, if you can follow directions, it shouldnt be that much of a challenge, not to mention the guides here that can assist you if you have questions. Rooting allows for more user control over your phone. It also opens up apps on the market that wouldnt otherwise be available that allow you to tweak things more, file explorers that give you more search options, etc. As far as the custom roms, the best one I have found is the one listed right here on this site. Its basically the stock rom with a few bells and whistles, like the ability to tether your connection without having to pay the xtra 29.99/month.

Sure it seems daunting, but once you do it, its cake :D

Most of the time its best to wipe out the phone completely, then install the rom. As a previous poster said, if you dont like it, try another OR go back to the stock rom.

I'm also a rookie. Are there step by step instructions. Also how long will it take?

Root save your stock Rom, then flash a new rom once a week till you find one you like. Use Gmail to back up your contacts, App Brain or Titanium Backup to restore them. I can flash a brand new rom and have my contacts and apps back up in 20 minutes, less then an hour to have all my screens the way I like them. Not only will the phone be more personalized but your friends with Evo's will freak when they see how different yours is.
