Husband and I thought we were set on the Epic Touch.. have been reading the loss of signal issues.. so not sure now. I mentioned to Sprint issues.. got a "this is one of the best phones.. not heard of issues yadda yadda"

Considering EVO 4g also.. battery life not good?

And.. if you are an over 6 foot man with large hands.. how did you adjust to the touch screen?

And.. want to order through Amazon, Bestbuy.. or whoever has cheap deal.. is it rocket science to set up account when buying phone online?

Bottom line.. if you were just buying your first smartphone... need it for work and bringing up spreadsheets, etc., texting, good battery life.. what would you buy?

I know there are a ton of threads that cover some of this.. but I get set on one thing and then blasted with 22 pages of Epic loss of signal comments!?!

In my personal opinion even with the LOS (loss of signal) issues on the Epic Touch I think for having the most current technology I would go with the Epic Touch over the HTC Evo.

Both are great devices but for the long haul and having the most current hardware I would do the Epic. Evo is a great device too but is starting to show some age now, your talking about a device that is about a year and half old. Its still fully supported by HTC & Sprint but at the same time for how much longer, especially with newer devices rolling out every few weeks/months..

I believe Sprint/Sammy is aware of the LOS (loss of signal bug) that is going on and I would like to believe they will have an update/maintenance fix that will eventually be applied to help with this issue.

As far as buying a phone online, this is something to take into serious consideration. Naturally its always better to buy directly from the carrier for best warranty support. Third party retailers can have some funky warranty programs that don't benefit the customer very well at all and you may end up regretting, because at one time or another most users have something wear out or break on their devices requiring some sort of service/repair.

Hope a bit of this helps. Keep doing your research as your doing and your final judgement will be much better.

I would go for the EVO Design 4G since its new and coming out very soon. The EVO line of phones are awesome. I owned and loved my EVO 4G, actually I loved all HTC phones I've owned.

Thanks for the tip on the HTC EVO Design 4G .. I just looked it up at Walmart and it's $29?? Is that right? for a just released phone? or am I still out of my mind.

Just to touch on some other points you mentioned.

1. Battery life is not as good as you think, until you learn "power management". With a stock out of the box, expect only about 10hrs with most android devices. This will get better over time. With proper management, you should get around 16hrs or so. It varies by device.

2. I'm 6ft2, and after a learning curve (and some whining), he'll get used to the touchscreen.

3. As with office docs, 2 of the better apps are Polaris and Documents to go. Remember, it's not MS Office, so you only get the basic editing options, but they work well.

Yup, it looks like Walmart does have the Evo Design 4G for $29. The deal probably is for new, Sprint contracts and perhaps not an upgrade elibility. So if you are a new customer on Sprint that's a great deal. Otherwise, expect to pay $99 for an upgrade.

Eitherway, not a bad way to get a new device with impressive specs for the price. The device just came out so reviews are few. I'd expect a solid device, considering HTC is known to offer quality products.

I work for Sprint Android Tech Support and we do have LOS flagged as a known issue with the Epic Touch and the fix is going to be in the next Maintenance Release; however, Samsung determines when a MR will be developed and released. They put the MR together and we (Sprint) push it out to the devices. We have not had many calls on this problem and IMO it is a really great phone. I am going to sacrifice the slide-out keyboard on my Epic 4G for the Epic Touch when I am eligible for an upgrade. Also, a great app for accessing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on Android is called QuickOffice. It costs $14.99 from the market but if you search online you can find the APK file for free.

resrurrecting a dead thread. I have an LG Marquee, and it always struggles with signal (and therefore battery life and overheating are problems too) in my office on the 14th floor, major metro area. Airave is not an option at work, nothing to plug it into for internet access.

Have the mainteneance updates come out to deal with the signal issues mentioned here? Anyone have a verdict?
