I just received a Nexus 7 as a gift from my girlfriend, and I'm looking for a good folding case (preferably one that can also work as a stand, mainly in landscape but portrait might also be nice).

I've come across reviews for some cases that said the user had problems with Google Sky, Star Chart, and other GPS apps, because the case blocked the magnetic compass and GPS chip too much.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a case which won't have these issues?

I haven't actually seen any, but stay away from full metal cases, if you see one or you'll end up with the same issues with signals that that tf201 had.

Check customer reviews when looking at "smart cases" (that turn the screen on /off when opening/closing as they use magnets to alert the device.

So it has only been two days with the case and this seems to work fine right now. Amazon.com: MoKo Slim-fit Case for Google Nexus 7 Android Tablet (Black): Computers & Accessories

It does have the pogo magnet in the spine which allows the screen to come on automatically when opened and turns off when closed. Like the Refrigerator light, it does work... Take my word.. Seriously... it really does. This alone should help with battery life. I have yet to try this by propping it up somewhere in my vehicle.

I'm using the Blurex case. Fits the description you listed and doesn't interfere with anything to my knowledge. It's available on Amazon for $15, so I'd definitely recommend it.
