newbie question about wi fi

I called up my fios tech and they hooked me up to wifi..my password etc etc....when I click to connect it says I am connected but the icon on the top does not show up..And sometimes it keeps searching and searching...it did work like it was connected because it downloaded all of my play store updates that updates when it is connected to wifi..I hope somebody can help a brother out before I have to waste my time on the phone with some tech..Thanks

Go to Settings>Wi-Fi. Does it show there that you're connected to your wi-fi network?
