Newbie Question - Option disappeared

I'm a recent convert from iOS (iPhone 4S- quite a jump). I've been playing with the settings and suddenly when I went back to my home screen, the arrow on the left for opening another window or multitasking suddenly disappeared. How do I get it back? Halp.

I've done that. Do only certain apps allow multitasking? I'd like to have ESPN Sportscenter and Yahoo Fantasy app open simultaneously.
