I just rooted my phone. It was a quick, painless process and I succeeded on the first try. It took 4 minutes.

I deleted those damned pre-installed apps I have never opened that were taking up a bunch of room.

Now I'm at that "what do I do now" stage...anyone have any tips, tricks, apps or ideas to contribute?

Pop harmonia2 on it. Tweak it to your liking. Install the 2d/3d gpu think if you like. Use link2sd instead of app2sd. I prefer laucherpro as it reacts faster. Definitely been where you are now. You may find like I did that there are only a few key uses to root itself. But the roms and options in them will be the true prize of rooting. Features you'll ask yourself later (why the hell wasn't this included by default anyways!! And wont wanna do without)

Quattrimus ics is nice but tends to use more battery. I don't think its deep sleep mode works quite right just yet.

Harmonia 2 is what I used for a long time but it gave me fits with the newest 2.09 update however 2.08 worked great for me.

If you don't care about upgrading to gingerbread or ics then Harmonia 1 and resurrected bumblebee are supposed to be nice too!

I too had issues first time upgrading to 2.09 but only in respect to linked apps which eventually linked. I don't understand the communities want for ICS as it's clearly not ideal for this phone but to each their own! They're all worth a shot. If only experimentation were so easy on other platforms! (Hugs nandroid backup)

ICS works pretty well, save for the random reboots that some experience. It may run flawlessly for you.

I'd recommend flashing Mirage CM7.2. He does a lot of good work on his kernel, it's fast, has absolutely fantastic battery life, and includes all the CyanagenMod goodies without any bloat.

I couldn't live without a custom ROM for little features like the status bar brightness control. You may find stock does everything you need. Just make sure you read up on making / restoring backups (very easy to do) and see which one works best for you. The ability to overclock is nice too.

These are the two files I've used after using Gingerbreak on my families 4 OV's. This may be a very outdated CWM but it's solid and works great for me!

Extract the img from zip, Install FlashImg, select Recovery, select the Img file, and let'r roll =)
To access the menu once it's done, while the phone is turned off hold Power + Volume Down + Home buttons until you see the LG logo, then release. You should then immediately make a 'nandroid' backup =)

Each rom thread carries it's own instructions, but it's fairly straight forward to test out different roms and find which suits your needs!

I would probably shoot for drews touch or cannibal recovery. But with ginger break and flash image gui hooking your phone up to your pc is not even needed any more. Another +1 for mrg666's Rom too.

So, I did the whole FlashImage GUI, extracted the .img, etc. My phone didn't shut off so I turned it off myself. Then I pressed the Button combo, and that simply turned the phone back on regularly, not recovery. How do I make a nandroid backup?

And, can I use FlashImage GUI to install other ROMs?

You don't "push" the button combo. Hold down home, volume down, and power, and let go when the silver LG logo comes up.

I recommend using the files I linked above (its just faster than cmd lol) making a backup then flashing cannibals (zip)

Do I use FlashImage GUI to install other ROMs? Can I use any ROM?

(This rooting stuff is the only stuff I'm a n00b at. Everything else, I know like the back of my hand!)

Nah, you're more or less done with FlashImage (don't uninstall it though). From now on, you'll need to go in to the Recovery (where you made the nandroid backup) to install roms.

There are quite a few to choose from (great community/phone). The first thing I'd recommend you do is read this: http://forums.androidcentral.com/op...012-optimus-v-reference-guide-start-here.html

Take special note of the sections for : Installing roms, and Roms. Another note to make now that you're doing such things (it's been said a million times but it's no joke). Don't hit the factory reset in the Privacy Menu only do it via CWM from hereon out!

There are a few acronyms you're going to see thrown around a lot here that may be confusing, Here are a few.

OV (OptimusV)

CWM (ClockWorkMod) : You've already seen this =)

IHO (Inferior Human Organs)
http://forums.androidcentral.com/op...rior-human-organs-unofficial-cm7-1-a.html#anb

CM7, CM9, etc (CyogenMod) This is a custom Rom/Firmware, All the custom Roms made for this phone are built based off one of these versions, which you like most is up to you.

ICS : Ice Cream Sandwich
GB : Gingerbread

Some other things you'll prob be interested in now:
The 'Radio' Update (Not worth it from all I gather).

You may now also want to consider flashing 'upgrades' (done via CWM's install from zip option):
These types of upgrades can be flashed 'on-top' of your Rom.

Read up on them, read the replies, and make up your own mind, I personally use the DisableCPU, didn't see much diff with the beats. Just make sure to make nandroid backups before you do such things.

Another thing you may want to read up on before you install any rom, is the sd-ext partition, and link2sd (app). You can format your SD card in CWM, and it's best to do it now before hand. When you create nandroid backups the sd-ext partition is also backed up!. Some Roms already have these features built in, some say gingerbread doesn't need it at all anyways (not sure about this), but I and many others use it.

You can use any rom that's designed specifically for the OptimusV. But know that there are considered to be two different OV's, the 'New Screen, and Old Screen OVs' New Screen OV's use Optimus-S screens/hardware. Make sure to find out which version you have. Most rom creators note specifically what version of their roms are for what).

Lastly: Get used to pulling out your battery. Sometimes things freeze/lock (not often though, seriously). But it WILL happen eventually in your trials of Roms, etc. Some roms take longer to 'first boot' than others, and don't freak out, this phone is amazing, and even if ya do 'break it' in most cases it can be undone thanks to the awesome community of people/knowledge!

Hope this has been helpful, I had more in mind but can't think of it all right now! :p
