Is it difficult or risky to perform a side load OTA?

Not any more risky than waiting for the update OTA. I'll update the Op with the MD5 checksum so you can check your download before sideloading. Your recovery will also still do the signature verification on the package, so you know it's right.
Its not particularly hard to do, either. A quick Google search on how to adb sideload will walk you through it.
