I have a nexus 4 16gb running android 4.4.2. Last night I tried to make a call and the ear speaker wasn't working. It worked fine when connecting headphones but not without it. I left the phone off at night. The next morning I turned the phone on and tried making a call and the ear speaker worked fine. However that afternoon the ear speaker stopped working again. What could be the problem??? Could it be a hardware or software issue?

It could be an issue with the hardware going bad. I would do a factory reset just to clear out any issues. If that doesn't help then it's a hardware problem and the speaker may need to be replaced.

I have same issue as FiretoFlames is talking about, after doing a factory reset problem is solved. But after a few days, it again stop working, I dont know, how to fix this problem, i am sure, its a software issue, not hardware. I have faced this issue after updating my device to 5.1.1

Had this problem too.
Searched the net, no answers.
Not software related.

In the end I figured that the socket got gummed up with pocket lint and or pocket humidity corroded the contacts inside.
I bought a new socket and a phone tool kit off ebay (<$15)and replaced it. It works!
