My nexus 4 was doing a great job conserving battery life till yesterday. I have turned off 4g/3g and selected "Use only 2g networks". If i could cut 2g, I would. I turn on wi-fi, maybe two or three times a day for 10-15 minutes and my screen usage is very minimal. The battery report below shows that I was getting good life from the battery.

Yesterday, i noticed the battery depleting pretty rapidly and by today the phone was dead (Nearly missed a meeting without the phone alarm). Once I started charging, I got this usage report.

Between the two reports, no new updates had been downloaded/installed. I did not open or start the map application in any way between the two reports. Since this incident, I have disabled the "Access to my location" option under Settings-Personal-Location Access, but I do not believe its an appropriate solution. After disabling 4g/3g usage followed by frugal wi-fi activation, the solution should not be to cut out a core feature of the android experience. I suspect this to be a software issue and wonder if I am alone in facing this problem.

So why don't you just go back to 4g/3g and see if you get back to normal battery usage.

I'm curious (not meaning to be critical), if you have no interest in having even 2g speeds, why would you buy a smartphone?

open maps-->menu-->settings-->location settings-->uncheck "Report from this device"

maybe maps was never running before,

Download a different battery monitor, like GSAM, it gives more accurate and detailed battery use stats and will help you see whats going on.

As for 2g, you can actually just turn off mobile data completely if you want, but I don't think there's a way to just go to G or GPRS through settings (maybe if you apply a different APN).

Thanks for your responses. I do use my smartphone over wi-fi and enjoy the android experience over a non-smartphone. I also appreciate the fact that I do not have to pay any data charges (I'm usually always within wi-fi range).

Checking the option "Report from this device" shows that its currently disabled. Installed GSAM, and it shows 100% usage by apps and the significant drains being
Android 44.6%
Kernel 20.6%
Currents 12%
Maps 11.5%
Google Services 2.9%

Drilling down to Maps, "Number of times waking device" is 1218 and CPU usage is all background 10m 39s. Do these numbers look normal?

My experiences over the last few weeks with the phone have been good. The Maps issue did not resurface and I consistently get between 3 to 4 days on a full charge. I still do have the battery monitoring app on my device and it shows over 36% usage for phone calls as the biggest drain (very much in line with my expectations). For a responsive, unlocked world phone, I would fully recommend the Nexus4. Thanks again.

I have this same issue with my Note 2. It is really starting to **** me off, too. It all started when I got 4.1.2. I thought I had fixed it when I un installed Maps, deleted cache, data, ect then re installed maps after a reboot.

It sucks because today it was fine. Great in fact, then I charge the phone. Take it off the charger and Maps creeps back to the top of the list. I can really tell a difference in my phone battery life when map's is running that much. It really sucks. I was told turn off Report from this device and other things but it seems nothing really fixes it. Sometimes it's fine sometimes it drains the battery crazy fast.... Please someone that knows what im talking about and has really fixed it. Let me know what to do, Please... Its really making my experience with my Note 2 a bad one because I never know if Im going to get good battery life or bad battery life.. While I know when Maps starts running higher then 14%-15% with no usage, then ends up on top of the list and I lose about 4% of battery life an hour even when Im not using my phone..
