Note: I searched the AC forums and the closest to this issue I could find was here. If you know of another previously posted message, feel free to point me in this direction.

For the first month with my N4, I used a T-Mobile affiliate, but due to slow data coverage in my area, I decided to switch to Straight Talk (AT&T). This morning, my number finally ported over to ST AT&T. I entered the suggested APN settings, but am experiencing an issue: my phone will bounce back and forth between zero bars of coverage (but indicating "home" as the carrier) to indicating there's no network available.

A bit more information:
  • I did not have this issue using my previous microsim
  • My wife uses a ST AT&T sim in her iPhone 3GS and she gets much better coverage, so I don't think it's a coverage issue per se.

Any suggestions. Could it be a faulty microsim? Thanks in advance!

Aside from being wholesale spectrum, a lot of things can effect connectivity. I moved on from Verizon last year because I had nothing when it rained, snowed, holiday weekend, or just seemed like a time when a lot of people were online.

In regards to third carrier wholesale spectrum, I would not put it past the major carriers to make these connections junk. They were forced by lawmakers to provide this service and have no problem breaking rules and will frequently allow themselves to get sued before awkowledging the obvious. They also have no need to improve the quality of service. They simply try to expand 4g coverage as a selling point. How fast or consistent it really is doesn't matter to them.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I agree with the sentiment of wholesale spectrum you're suggesting, however when I place my N4 (ST AT&T sim) next to my wife's iPhone 3GS (ST AT&T sim), our phones show significantly different coverage. Something isn't adding up!

Wait!? Yours says "Home"? On my Pre 3 this was there but nothing Nexus 4? My service has been fine. Only random data issues once in a blue moon which is usually fixed with a quick airplane mode. But actual cell signal has been great.

Perhaps try my settings instead, might help? http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-4/257975-aggrivating-mms-whats-definitive-apn.html#post2623684

Yes, when coverage is present, I see "home" at the bottom of the notification drop down. When coverage is not present, I sometimes see "Emergency Calls only" and other times nothing. (I am using an app that also displays if it's 2g, 3g, etc.) The screenshots below were taken seconds apart.

Try the app Tweakker Apn Internet MMS from the app store. It keeps an update to date profile of carriers. I was having issues a while back and use the app. It cleared up the problem.

Lmao, all this time I didn't notice that home on there, thanks for that lil info. What is the app that shows your connection,I'd like to try it out. Did you try out my APN settings? Any luck?

cool thanks, I'll check it out. It usually helps if you delete the APN profile completely and do it from scratch and reboot. As opposed to just going in and editing your existing APN profile.

First, it can take 24 hours for data to work properly with Straight Talk. (I see that has passed, now.)
If it's still not working, put in a Facebook support ticket. Your reply from them will be generic, but they seem to reset things on their end when you submit a ticket so you may see an improvement without doing anything they suggest (most of which you will have already tried). If it still doesn't work, then yes, it could be a faulty sim.
Finally, I have a Nexus 4 and my husband has an iphone 4S. When I first got the N4, I tried his sim in my phone and got a better signal (looking at dBm's) than he did which may or may not relate to data, but I think it does. I was waiting on a sim cutter so I could use the sim from my GNex in the N4. FWIW, the GNex got a really poor signal. Actually, we're lucky to get a signal in our house at all. I believe that the iphone 3G uses a mini sim so you can't switch out sims to test. Could be wrong there as I'm the Android not the Apple despite having to learn to keep his 4S in data and mms service on ST.
