Nexus 5 Announcement/Release Anticipation Thread

Oh also don't forget, anyone who has a Chase Freedom card October-December is 5% cash back on amazon.com purchases if it is released on there.

Really? I don't believe Google's intention in releasing the Nexus 5 is to take over the smartphone world, or anything close to that. If it were, there would be a lot more marketing commotion. At bottom, the primary purpose of the Nexus 5 is still as a reference device.

I think they have to get this launch right or the tech world will indeed throw stones at Google. This is their flag ship line that they take pride in, not just some reference device. You don't bungle it and give your competitors flaming rocks to throw at you so to speak. Apple already beats the fragmentation drum at Google so don't give them more drums to beat.

Exactly. Keep in mind that the Nexus 4 sold somewhere around 3 million units as of 2Q 2013. Compare that with the GS4 which sold 20 million units in its first 2 months. Or the iPhone 5 which sold 2 million units in the first 24 hours.

The Nexus is a intended for a much smaller market. It's generally for developers and tinkerers, which is a small, small percentage of mobile phone buyers. Just because it seems like everyone here wants one doesn't mean there is widespread, mass appeal. There just isn't.

Probably announce when they will have an official unveiling in the future today...don't get your hopes up. Just figure it won't be today...so when tonight comes and no N5...won't be so disappointed ha.

The market has the right to ignore the seller's expectations... While I don't envision the N5 selling anywhere close to the numbers of iPhones or GS4, the world was awakened a bit more to the Nexus presence with the N4 - which would have sold far, far more than it did if it weren't for early availability issues. The success of the Nexus tablets have also helped establish it as its own brand, of sorts, in a broader market - people who'd never heard of Nexus at the time the N4 was released are far more likely to know about it now.

The N5, if not similarly plagued (knock on polycarbonate wood), should garner a much larger (though still not truly substantial) share than prior Nexus releases.

I agree. The Nexus brand is significantly more now than it used to be. But as you said, it's still nothing even approaching the level of the more broadly appealing devices.

Google doesn't care. they don't need to make a lot of money selling hardware - especially at the expense of their partners in the ecosystem. the big money/margins/profits for Google is in search and services. and that's where the future is too. Google wants their hardware partners to be fat and happy and profitable so they keep flooding the market with Android devices. Google does not want to be a hardware competitor and pi$$ off and alienate their hardware partners. the Nexus line is a delicate balance of offering a reference design phone inexpensively and direct worldwide for developers and enthusiasts - not the unwashed masses. and that's fine with Google. Google doesn't care if Nexus doesn't break any big sales records.

Is everyone expecting some type of "announcement" or literally for the device to appear in the Play Store at 8?

Just received email from Motorola stating that they decreased their Moto X price to $99. Coincidence that they are dropping it today when the Nexus 5 could be coming out?

I REALLY hope it drops today, but boy, I just don't see it happening.

15 min...

With all the garbage info so far, nothing would surprise me. I do NOT see any chance of it being purchaseable for at least a week though, so put your credit cards down and take a deep breath fellas. No reason to ruin a perfectly good f5 key on something you wont be able to buy today. I say pre order at the absolute earliest would be tomorrow, and that is only if the announcement is today.

F5? I have a Chrome extension checking the Google Play Devices page for any changes every 60 seconds. It'll supposedly alert me if it sees anything. lol
